T-Mobile Sidekick Question ?

Alright well my boyfriend just recently got the t-mobile sidekick, but he has prepaid which means he has to keep refilling his account, what I would like to know is how it's possible that he's telling me he just put like 20 dollars of minutes worth in it & he texts me about 4 times & his minutes are already wasted ? I told him pre paid is supposed to have unlimited minutes but he said t-mobile doesn't work like that anymore and now charges somewhere around 10 cents every text sent & received, is this true ? can someone explain ? he said he hasn't called anyone either
