T Mobile @ Home, anyone using this new service???

I've read various recommendation configurations. Probably best for the voice side if your WRTU54G-TM is the first device connected to the cable modem. However it's also been suggested that you can use another router in between and split the traffic: part to your WRTU54G, servicing only the phones, and part to another router that services your PC's. Not sure how much difference that would make, but if you have an extra device it might be worth the experiment.

The configurations I have tried...

Cable modem to my linksys router. It fed my PC and the @Home router. That's where I discovered the issue

I then tried the @Home by itself enable port forwarding/triggering for torrents.

I called TMO and they say I have plenty of upload/download...I am wonder if the protocols that the @Home phone uses conflicts with torrents which use UDP and TCP. I am also using Peer Guardian which blocks anti P2P groups...but I don't think turning it off made a difference.

Some others have done some experimentation with voice quality and as I recall they found that increased bandwidth use for data decreases voice quality. If I recall correctly, they were experimenting with UMA but I could see the same results applying here.

On that same note, we run 5 computers and 2 Curves with Wi-Fi enabled on our network. We have both lines in use on the router and have not run into noticable voice issues in the month since we had it activated.

I have personally been using it for over 4 months with no major issues other than reseting the router and modem about once a month (which I was doing before anyhow).

What is your download/upload speeds for your broadband? Also...the call quality is only for those who I am talking to...it sounds fine on my end. Again, I only have 256k up and I use 25k up for torrents...I tried only 10k up and it helped a little bit.

Thanks. I read some forum post about vonage and p2p and basically they said two things...

#1 Setup the QoS on your router P2P lower priority

#2 Tell your bittorent client to use no more than 150 concurrent connections.

UPDATE: I did both of the above and it solved my problem! Not sure which made more of a difference but having the home phone work while downloading my EZTV shows is fantastic.

I am new to tmobile - just signed up this weekend and added the router ($44 at Costco) with the at home service for $10 a month. My plan was to eliminate my landline from AT&T, but I have not set it up yet because the router instructions says it won't work with an alarm system or fax. The customer rep who sold the router said it should not be a problem for either and that he has sent a fax using this service. Does anyone have information regarding alarm systems? Is this warning about an alarm system just because sometimes the router may go down without you knowing it? Is the best option to just reduce the AT&T landline to bare minimum for emergencies and use the tmobile at home service as a second line that is essentially used as the main line for all phone calls?

The best choice is to reduce your primary line to basic service for the alarm system. The warning about the alarm system and faxes is not because of the system going down (land lines do that as well) but because of the data compression the router does. At the current moment it doesn't do faxes well. I have been told by those that have used Vonage that it had similar issues.

Thanks for the clarification.

One more question - are you charged all the same various taxes and fees on the at home line as you are charged for on the land line? Or is it a flat $10 a month with no additional fees?

There are additional fees and such as normal for a cell phone or land line. My bill for the @home portion comes out to about $13 a month.

I have been using mine since before launch (won mine at a Dealer presentation) and have loved it. We have switched our store lines over and are in the process of upgrading our internet to 7.5 (dual phone lines, 5 computers, and 2 curves connected all at once drags a 1.5 connection to a crawl) and are happy with what we have. The only complaint we have (and it has more to do with voip service like this and vonage) is the lower current coming out of the router which means we are unable to use our existing wiring (too many phones and too long of travel) until we can bump it up.

I have @home

Question.... The blue light on the router keeps flashing .... How do you turn it off? I read that it is a voice mail notification ... If so, how do I check that?

If you don't have the VTech Units designed for T-Mobile, then just dial your home number and it should bring you right into the VM system. I know there is a shortcut for VM, but don't know what it is on anything other than the T-Mobile Branded handsets. Once you check the voicemail it will turn the blue light back into solid.
