T-Mobile G1 activation?

I bought a g1 off craigslist. I have T-Mobile SIM card but I don't have a data plan. My friend has a t-mobile SIM card with the data plan. Could I use his SIM card to activate the g1, then change the SIM card with mine. Then could I keep using the g1 with my SIM card in it? Would I have overcame the problem of the activation?
 
No, the phone would be activated for data only under his account. If you left his sim in there, then you have data. As soon as you put your sim back in there, you will not have data. The services follow the acct you have stored on the Sim card.
