T mobile Cell phone question?

Ok so if you have a T-Mobile family plan but also have a T-Mobile phone that doesnt have a SIM card and you want to add a line can you just get a SIM card and add that line in without getting a new phone?
If you add a line does that mean you have to make a 2 year contract?
