T-MO and GPS

One of the few complaints that I actually have with t-mo is the that they one have one blackberry which has built in GPS. I had a 8130 with Altel and it did, my girl friend has a Curve 8310 on A.T.&T. and she says it does (haven't verified myself though). Is there any particular reason that T-Mo doesn't have actually have but the 1 bb with built in GPS besides the fact that they are way behind everyone else as far as there phone selections. BTW, I will have to say I am not at all impressed with the announcement of the new Pearl it is nothing more than a 8100 with a flip that I can tell.

I don't know the strategy of T-Mobile but it appears that their emphasis was on wi-fi and the use of that - calling w/o using minutes and faster internet browsing, etc.) and the use of wi-fi hotspots that are almost everywhere instead of GPS.

AT&T has just recently announced the offer of a wi-fi device (8320 maybe?, as well as the Bold) - maybe T-Mo will announce the Bold and go one step further offering both in one device.

jblackfish is right - wifi and UMA/GAN (voice encapsulation over wifi) are key to T-Mo's strategy. The current Pearl's and Curve's don't allow for the population of both GPS and Wifi on the same board.

(and the Bold doesn't do UMA/GAN).

Tmobile is all about wifi usage and that is why, you can't compare the service that they offer though. If you want gps why don't you get a gps enable phone from att and get it unlocked the guys at horizon wireless can unlock it for you

Actually, best solution would be to go pick up a bluetooth GPS puck - and use it on any blackberry that doesn't have it built in.

(or wait til later this year)

Att is releasing wifi bb later this year.. 8120, 8320 if i remember correctly

honestly i prefer wifi over gps...
thats why we have google maps!

well i can tell you quite a bit here. they have the 8820, and the 8800 that have gps, also the sony ericcson tm506. they all run through telenav and the service is a monthly fee of 10$. it hasnt been a popular feature, many users go without using it. now also the problem when deciding to what to add to a device is what to fit. the pearl and curve only have a spot for one antenna and sticking to what t-mobile is all aout the @home service would be more important so that one antenna is being used for wifi as appossed to gps. the 8820 series because of size can house both wifi and gps.

the blackberry 8220(the flip pearl)is an amazing device as i have already played with one. yes it's a flip but it is an amazing device....think back to when the pearl launched there were a lot of naysayers due to size and additon of trackball, etc. people didnt think it would fit as well as having people thinking it was a great idea, well look what has evolved out of it and how many more new blackberry users have joined that would have never to begin with if it wasn't because of the pearl. it's the same with the 8220/flip pearl/kickstart whatever you would like to call it. it's to attract the consumer who is worried about moving to a device that may look intimidating to them so lets put it into something they are use to seeing (a flip device) or for those business users who or existing berry users who want something a little more discreet that looks more like a phone, rather than feeling like they are tied down to "company work" phone or a device that has to tag along with them...well this is the answer. I remember when RIM said they would never make a device with a camera, or trakball, or a touchscreen, or flip and look at them now.......it's evolution.

onto the interesting stuff, the 8220 is an amazing device, its sleek, but rugged, very powerful, and can take a beating. it has the 4.6 OS and has an amazing browser, the screen is so sharp, everything is fast and clear supports up to 16 gbs of additional storage. when a message or facebook notification is sent to your device you can actually check it with the device closed. the facebook image of the person who sent you the notification will show on the screen. a strong camera, media player is amazing, sounds geat. it is an amazing device to add to the lieup, and better will come in time. i think once you hold the device you may have a change of heart about it.

I have the 8820. GPS works with the bb maps and google maps. Telenav is another option that adds voice to the navagation. I use google maps through GPS and it works great. Yes a camera would be nice but I have a bad sense of direction and always have so I don't mind not having the camera. Sometime you have to loose one thing to gain another. I'm sure eventually RIM will sell the perfect all in one device with everything included. In the meantime they have to appeal to everyones tastes. I know a lot of people that won't buy a phone that has a camera. Its all about which feature is a priority for you. T-Mobile may be slow on phone releases but they have the best data prices that I have seen so far where I live. ~via BB (wap.rabroad.com)~

I used My 8800 for my GPS until, Google came out with their new MAPS APP with streetview. That APP somehow can detect where u are even if you don't have GPS...try it out.

Sounds like some are implying that wifi is a substitue for GPS...I don't get it.

On my tmo 8320I have wifi bit if I want my location in Google Maps, unless I am willing to accept the low resolution of triangulation, I have to use my outboard GPS...no?
