Synthetic Oil

I'm going to be doing the 1,000 mile oil change on my '09 Street Glide in a day or two. Here at the air base in S. Korea, there aren't many options for oil to use, but to my surprise, they do have Royal Purple Max-cycle. The Royal Purple web site recommends 20W50 in the engine and 10W30 in the primary and the tranny of Harley Twin Cams. The 10W30 for motorcycles isn't available here, but I can get 10W40. Do you think this will be good to use in the primary and the tranny? Have any of you used the Royal Purple oil? I'd appreciate any advice.
 
Royal Purple is fine oil. I would use the 20-50 in the engine and tranny and the 10-40 will be fine for the primary. Just make sure the oil for the primary does not have the energy conserving star on it. If the energy conserving star is on the bottle it contains friction modifiers which can cause the clutch to slip.

If there is a problem with the energy star on the synthetic you have available to you, I would not hesitate to put standard dino oil in the primary, but thats just MHO.
 
I would also agree with the above posters about dino in the primary and the tranny. A good gear oil in the tranny would be fine, at least 75-90. As far as the primary your best bet might be a dino diesel engine oil 10-40, diesel oils do not contain the friction modifiers that car oils usually contain. Use to run shell rotella in wet clutch applications with no problems at all.
 
i recently changed over to royal purple in my 06 rk..but before i did i emailed royal purple and asked them if it was appropriate to use 20-50w max cycle in all three holes engine,trans,primary...they said it was absolutly appropriate...iv notice a smooth shifting,quieter motor and am very happy with the change so far
 
Thanks for the responses. I learn a lot from reading your posts. I just got the SG in June and it only had 757 miles on it. Bought it from a contractor who took a job in Iraq and needed to sell it. Got a good deal. It's my first Harley and my first bike since high school in the late 70s. Ride safe!
 
+1 on the gear oil for the tranny, I wouldn't put 20/50 engine oil in the tranny. Don't you have a walmart close by? I thought they were everywhere...lol. See if they have the Mobil1 15/50 synthetic. It's good oil for your engine and only 21.00 for 5 qt jug here. Some use Type F transmission fluid in the primary.
