Synchro Woes.....

Anyone got some good advice?

Here's the scene..... Desktop PC, Laptop PC, Tungsten T, Nokia 6260.... How the hell do I get all of these machines to have the same info?

Most of my scheduling work I do on the Tungsten. But that is currently syncing with Palm Desktop only. I tried using Outlook but ended up in a hell of mess.... Boned it all and went back to Outlook Express which doesn't have a Calendar. So I can't merely sync Tungsten contacts with O/Ex either right? And I wanted to sync emails with DocsToGo but that doesn't sync with O/Ex either right?

I can't even get my Desktop to Network with my laptop PC! I'm trying to use my broadband NetComm Router as the interface but... diddly squat. The idea being that I can have Palm Desktop on both Lappy and Desk and EASILY sync the info with one hotsync. Am I dreaming??

I currently have 4 islands of info... most of it is accurate through double entry etc... But man I thought this technology was meant to save me time, not eat up hours of it?...

I cannot speek about the Nokia 6260 (not sure about compatability with either Windows CE or Palm) but I routinely sync using the desktop software (on the CD that came with the PDA) and the included conduits for Outlook. I have a desktop at work and at home. Although I no longer use my laptop for anything significant, there is really no difference between two desktopks and a desktop/laptop combo. About a year ago I used the laptop as well, so I had essentially three PCs and a PDA.

Just make sure you select the checkbox to allow synchronization with multiple PCs in one of the Outlook Conduits (automatically updates the settings in other conduits). This is done in the Custom config settings on the PC side software.

The Nokia looks like it does it's own thing when syncing to the desktop in that I find no reference to Windows CE or Palm software in the literature. So I am guessing here that you have a different platform with the phone and therefore would have to use different software for it This would complicate the matter, but I believe it would still be do-able. It is just that you would likely have to keep close tabs on which devices need to update and in which order. Doing then out of order could cause some duplicate entries to be created on all devices.

Cheers,
John

Thanks for the reply John. The 6260 uses Symbian OS.

So your device will sync to Palm Desktop AND Outlook? I thought it could be one or the other only? From memory, that is where a lot of my problems arose using Outlook. So with your 3 PC's you had Palm Desktop and Outlook on each machine right? So you hooked up the cradle to each machine to HotSync? Not sure how you physically connect to each machine. I even tried HotSyncing my Laptop via InfraRed but that didn't work either. I was hoping to sync with one machine, then have say the Desktop talk to my Laptop with appropriate changes... a Network HotSync...

No, I only sync to Outlook. I have never used the Palm Desktop software, I keep my contacts and appointments in Outlook. When I first got my TX, the cradle was on my home PC and I used the SyncCable in the Office. Now I have the cradle in the office and I sync at home via wi-fi.

My previous setup was with a Handera 330 (similar to a Palm III) and I had a separate cradle for Both PCs and a serial sync cable for my laptop. With my old PDA, the software did not support LDAP properly so I could only got my personal email and not my business email (when I was contracting to a previous employer). Where I am working now, at one time I was able to download both my company email and personal email to the PDA.

However, because of the way our technical platform has been changed, and for added security, I have to access my corporate email at home connecting to VPN. I have not yet taken the time to invest in any VPN software for my TX so I can't tell you how that will work.

Currently I use VersaMail to get my email directly (via wi-fi) from my ISP when I'm at home, so I have the conduit for VersaMail set to "Do Nothing" because I set the firewall on the PC to block all WAN connectivity while I'm away. (Did I mention that I'm obsesive about security?) When I want my email, I open VersaMail and click on GET which then connects to my wireless router.

As for IR syncing, I have not tried that with my TX either. I recall from previous experience with my Handera and laptop, the IR feature is truned off or disabled in the BIOS by default. So to get that to work, you may need to enable it and install appropiate drivers.

Go here (then scroll to page 80) for more information on setting up the IR between the laptop and the Palm. If Infrared is not an option in the Hotsync manager, then it is likely not enabled on your laptop.

Hope this helps,
John

You might check with Intellisync (just purchased by Nokia). You can get a version that will sync to the Palm and perhaps will allow you to sync to the Nokia as well via Outlook.

Intellisync may still be found at Pumatech.com until they get all of the conversion done to the new owner.

Live Sync - some of the boys over at another forum have been using it with some form of success. I haven't tried it yet and probably won't because of my Treo really does better with Pocket Mirror Pro.

I'm glad to see that SwithSync finally updated to 4.0....I used it when it was 3.0 and hated it.
