Sync ONE GROUP of contacts only with android (HTC Desire)

So according to this thread: http://android.modaco.com/content-page/305926/htc-desire-root-update/page/120/#entry1253966 it seems the MoDaCo founder has rooted the Desire. I wonder will this help at all in being able to resolve this issue?
 
Well rooting on its own just gives you super user access to your phone (thus allowing you to do some stuff like installing custom firmwares, etc).

This opens up two possibilities:

* Install Android Home (not a lot of use without the Contacts app).
* Install the Contacts app (although XDA say it doesn't work).

However, I don't think SenseUI is open source, so even if you are rooted nobody can make a custom firmware that has a modified version of SenseUI in it that allows you to set the sync groups.

Still... it opens up possibilities.
 
Well I'd be prepared to give up Sense UI for a custom styles Sense UI with the mail and calendar widgets on the home screen I guess.

But if you say that contacts can't be installed on it and that Android Home wouldn't come with the contacts then I'm not sure where I'm at

I'm not sure how safe the root would be. I don't want to be messing around with modding stuff, I just want something that works
 
Just thought I'd give this another quick bump since the Root method and instructions for the desire have now been released. Perhaps a solution can be had
 
I got this back from HTC, hopefully it can be resolved soon! Seems the HTC Incredible has the same issue too!

If this other guy you've been speaking to can get you a working Contacts app, then you may be able to just install it either from your PC via USB, or from SD card using any of the File Managers on the Market. However, I'd be surprised if the Contacts app can be installed like that. It really depends on a lot of things. This is zero risk, and is no different from installing any other app other than you're not using the Market to do it. It can easily be uninstalled.

If it can't be installed directly like that, then you may have to root your phone (i.e. get super user access) to force the Contacts app onto the phone. This does involve rooting your phone, which carries a small risk (especially on the Desire), and you will invalidate your warranty if you do this - although in practice nobody seems to check this if you return the phone and say it just stopped working.

If that can't be done, then you may be able to "cook" a ROM from that modaco site that includes the Contacts app. To install this ROM you must first be rooted (same risk as above), and you must install the custom ROM you cooked (an additional risk). You would also be running a custom ROM that has been made by someone else (do you trust them?) and has never been officially tested (might be buggy), but may also have lots of additional features and capabilities (like the Contacts app). This is the most complicated solution and the highest risk. So try them in order.
 
Thanks a lot, that makes it very clear what has to be done! Just to note though, the same guy on the boards.ie site made this thread: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055890745 which would appear to mean that rooting doesn't affect the warranty?

I'll see what I can do about it anyway! Wouldn't it be great now if HTC just released an update that fixed the problem so I and everyone else with the same issue wouldn't have to go to all through all this
 
Wow - that's a very interesting find.

It's odd that the Nexus One, which Google seem to encourage people to Root, and has no protection against it at all, does have its warranty invalidated by rooting, whereas the Desire has a load of protection against rooting, but doesn't have its warranty invalidated by rooting.

Maybe they just thought it was impossible.
 
So with the extensive help of partyatmygaff over msn, I was able to root my desire and I finally got the contacts app working on it! I saved the chat transcript as it may be helpful for anyone else wanting to install from Windows XP. This is an ultra dumbed down version. I made sure to ask as many questions as possible, even if I was 99% sure of the answer myself

Some of the files were sent to me over msn like the market enabler etc, but these should be easily found online anyway. Also, the program I use for the commant prompt is called "command prompt here" I think, but you can just type in the address of the folder in DOS if you know how anyway!

There is a good bit of filler, but it really covers absolutely everything you need to know so once you get to the bottom of the page, your desire should be rooted and ready to go

So I got the contacts sync thing working anyway, I can now sync with my chosen group from Gmail, but I can't believe it, if I have this group selected and I save a new contact, it wont save to that group, but just the "all contacts" group even though that's not selected

Always something! The guy in post 10 here: http://rabroad.com/forums/f9/add-or-edit-contact-groups-12668/ seems to have got it going, but as you can see in my reply, post 11, it's not saving to the desired group for me!
 
Well I hope if anyone is in the same situation I was it can be a quick solution

Thanks to you aswell for the constant support and help. Now I just hope I can get the bleedin contact save thing sorted!
 
I love how they don't actually give you an answer, only that if they do figure it out they'll post the answer somewhere (and don't say where) on their website, yet say "I trust this resolves your query".
