Swords and a bit of England's history?

I'm working on a book where the characters are users of edges weapons. The setting is in 1877, in London. I need to know if edged weapons were used then, what kind (especially daggers and other small swords. Not the regular "long" sword). If they weren't used, what century do I need to go back to? Up until how late was the parrying dagger, sword breaker, and dirk used? I also need the names of places that were inhabited but interspersed with dense forestry. They were using electricity then, right?
 
By 1877 the sword was more or less a ceremonial weapon. Guns and pistols had proven more effective. 1600's to 1700's would work better.
