Hi Kari,
Does your Mom have any pain or feelings or pressure in the area? Headache? Any other symptoms?
I suspect the docs at the ER wanted to test her sed rate to rule out
giant cell (temporal) arteritis. This is an inflammation of large arteries of the head and/or neck, and upper body. Most often the temporal arteries are affected... they run through the temples and provide blood to part of the scalp, the jaw muscles, and salivary glands.
A normal sed rate would probably rule out this condition but given that the swelling continues, I would definitely have her see a doctor ASAP for a complete and thorough work-up. Sooner rather than later.
