swollen foot

hi everyone, hope all is well with you all, was wondering i had to take a long trip and my left foot swelled about twice its size. never had that happen before. i had back surgery on october of 2007 i had roRAB and screws a spacer put in on l-5 and a fusion on l4-5 s1 and a internal bone stimulator put in. after i got out of the car and started walking around the swelling started going down and like i said its never happened before. i have a dr.'s appt. coming up but was wondering if anyone else has had this happen to them and why it would do that? thank you for reading my post and any relys are greatly apperciated. julie
 
went to my primary doctors and he seems to think it has somthing to do with my veins. i am on gapheintin 300 mg 3 x's a day and i am having the weight gain side affect i am avagering 1 lb a week right now so far have gained about 12 lbs. my right leg also is affected by my sciatica but the mri shows more scar tissue on the left. thought that was strange. he was going to put me on lyrcia but with the weight gain hes not going to now and if i continue to gain he is going to take me off the gapheintin. i have to go and see my surgeon today so i will let you all know what he says.
 
I have trouble witth swelling too. For me it turns out my thyroid was out of whack again and once my medication was adjusted swelling went away. I still think some of it was due to my back. Like you when I went for a walk alot of the swelling went down.
 
They as spinneys it is important that we get out and stretch every 30 minutes. My understand is it has something to do with being in the same position and the leg is dangling down for sometime. It is an anti-inflammatory response of some kind.
 
went to my surgeons and of course i had to see the nurse practitioner and not him and i had explained to him about my foot and he says its nothing to do with my back that its a circulation problem. i really think it has something to do with my back because i never had anything like that happen to me before but you can't argue with them(lol). just thought i would let you all know how i had made out. take care julie
 
Halfpint I know when I was on Neurontin which I think is the same thing you are on for nerve pain I had terrible swelling in my feet and legs. Luckily home health nurse knew it was a reaction to that drug and called my doctor and I was slowly weaned off that medicine. I swelled so bad that I was getting blisters on my legs. Did your doctor say anything about the medicine?

This is good advice, pepper;). I have recently had problems with both my ankles/feet swelling and I was told it was water building up from me not moving around much. I would guess this is probably the case with you, since you were sitting for so long.

Once you got o the Drs. please let us know how you are.

hi linda, no he didn't say anything about that being a side effect. i am having the weight gain side effect from it. i have been gaining about a pound a week from it and i had told him that. he was going to up it again until i pointed that out to him so he said he would leave it like it is for now and if i continue to keep gaining then he will ween me off it. my normal weight is around 120 and right now i am up to 130 and i can't fit into my clothes now so i am hoping that the gaining part of it stops soon. thanks for the info when i go back to him and if it continues i will mention that to him. take care julie
 
Also if you are on a drug like Lyrica, swelling is a common side effect. However, I notice that only my right ankle swells. My right leg is the one that was most affected by my sciatica.
 
Hey Julie wanted to let you know that I gained 12 lbs in 1 week. I was miserable. I hope you can get some relief.
