So I made a decision to go to College and I decide to major in AAS Medical Assistant of which is a 2 year degree. I wanted to just go for the 1 year Medical Aid Cert because I don't want to be in school that long and I don't what to have to take out huge loans to pay for it. My mother's friend did the AAS Medical Assistant Degree and told me that the Medical Aid Cert is a waste of my time because there is no way I could get a job in this Dumpy crappy town of North Bend/ Coos Bay!!! I agree listening to her and others I have talked to. My adviser told me that Financial Aid doesn't like to fund a small program like that so I had to declare AAS Medical Assistant and the problem is that in order for financial aid to pay I have to have 12 credits or more. I was originally awarded $5050.00 in a letter that I received from swocc and also told by an adviser that I would receive that much because i have no Family Contribution. But once I started to register for all my classes I wanted to take this winter term things started getting approved and denied and was no longer in estimated amounts. My Pell grant amount went down from $5050.00 to $3,267.00 and I was denied the Oregon opportunity grant and denied Federal Work Study!
They are only allowing me $1,633.00 per term! My classes and Tuition are $1,286.00 for the winter term and I still have to pay for books of which are going to be $400 and an $8 surcharge per credit, Ive got 12 credits so I have to pay this stupid $96 charge on top of my classes tuition and internet charges for online classes!!! This is CRAP! I don't understand why they have to make it so hard to go to school! When they encourage you to go to school but then make it so difficult for us to pay for it!
I don't understand Why I was denied Work Study, I met all the requirements to do work study but yet they deny me! The oregon assistance grant I was denied I know because they just ran out of money and over 3,000 students are being denied that grant. I think that Swocc doesn't really care about their students they just want students to take whatever so that they can get a paycheck to teach! Everywhere everyone is in the hole and needs money to survive and anyone will seem to do anything to convince others to pay up the A$$ so they can have a dime! What does one do? Just go to school and rack up a huge student loan that you have to pay back because the free money they claim to give you isn't what it's cracked up to be and even when you do graduate will you even have a job? I can't get a p/t job to help pay for school because I have to take 12 or more credits to get the free pell money, and I will not have time to do homework if I have to go to school for 8 hours then go to a job for 5-8 hours 3 or 4 days a week especially since employers nowadays aren't as Flexible as they use to be. I was working a Goodwill in Coos Bay and intended on going to school and working there but they fired me for something stupid, I was sick with strep and contagious and couldn't get to a dr because of no health insurance so I had to wait for an appointment with the low-income clinic before I could go back to work.. I communicated with them and they said ok no prob just get better and we'll see you when you come back.. well the day I was intending on returning the manager Jason Called me and told me not to bother. I was initially let go the day I called and told them that I was sick and had an appointment on a particular day.. they waited a week to tell me I was fired.. very crappy! However I get unemployment now and hopefully I will qualify to receive it while I'm going to school... oh boy if they deny me that I'll be extremely pissed! I'm planning on using it to pay for my books this term and next term.. I applied for a student Loan for $1000 to cover some expenses but it's yet to be approved!!! If I'm denied a student Loan I have no Idea how I'll make it... Swocc will probably drop me and then make me pay the free pell grant back if that happens.I also feel extreemly discriminated against.. people who are single mothers are getting it better than those who don't have children.. It use to be the other way around single mothers were discriminated against now it's us who don't pop out a kid just to get on welfair and live off the system. WTF I'm not saying that all single mom's are doing that but those who have are ruining school for those like me! Sucking up all the free money and assistance just because they have kids!
