Switching to different phone, does plan have to change?

Greetings all,
I have read through the sticky on how to switch phones; I currently have a RAZR and am thinking about buying a VERSA. I am out of contract and want to stay that way, so I want to use a friends VERSA which he does not want anymore. In many of the tutorials on switching, it states that you may need to upgrade/change your account based on the phone you are activating. I am assuming that means if the phone needs a data plan, I would need to upgrade. I'd like to know how I figure out what phones need data plans and what phones don't. Specifically I need to know if the VERSA needs one or if it's optional. I know some phones can make use of a data plan but don't need it while others require the data plan or you can't use the phone period.Thanks
 
You shouldn't need to change plans no - However, if you want to use internet or data on the versa you may need to get data activated, or a plan to go with it if you already have data activated on your plan, or else you'll start paying per mb.
