Swap a 1098 dry clutch with a 848 wet?

I had the same question actually. I guess the options are nil. Oh well, I will just keep the original clutch cover on.

PS: I too have had multiple Ducatis and have always been annoyed by the dry clutch rattle. Anyone can go ahead and scream blasphemy. I hear it ALL the time.

On a more serious note I'm on my 3rd Ducati aswell. The dry clutch noise has only just started to grow on me. On my last 2 I fitted the original aluminium cover off the very first 916s. This cover is a much thicker aluminium than the laminated steel and did deaden the rattle a little better. Not much but enough for me. Make sure the dealer can show you one before you buy because the part number supercedes to the steel anyway. In saying that I now run a Woodcraft cover thats half open. Makes a hell of a racket. If I could get it quiter I would but I figured if its going to be noisy might as well go all the way...

The 848 cases are different to the 1098 so I doubt the entire clutch/crankcase cover would fit. Shame though....

the dry clutch works really well on the 1000cc+ bikes like yours.

The reason they went to a wet clutch on the 848 is because the smaller motor needs to be reved more and requires more slippage on the clutch to get it moving. My 748's clutch oil got dirty every 150 miles because of the heat and My 916 was always clean, I noticed I aways had to slip the clutch alot more on the 748 then the 916 and had to keep the revs about 1500 to 2000 higher on the 748. Really wished my new 749 had the wet one. I also am not a fan of the noise of the dry clutch but honestly it's not worth the cost VS maybe reiablity of the bike. IMHO

to make the swap you will need the whole clutch case from the 848, maybe clutch and basket and the clutch cover. Really not that hard todo just time and money.

not possible to put wet clutch on 1098.
848 can go from wet to dry, but 4 the other way around you need welding inside de crankcasings. and even then u are missing an importand oil channel.....see u driling a whole in a casing don't think so.
Ain't gonna explain the whole oil-system of the engine here

trust me i know why. + have to check for primary gears to. primary of the 1098 crankschaft is (how u say this in englisch) with 'teeth' and not "conical" like 848. Need to change primary schaft off gearbox (wet clutch is schorter schaft) and i can go on like this......

we mod 848 to dry clutch for racing. price is someware between 5 and 6000 euro (racing gearbox, primary gears, clutch cover side engine, slipperclutch + work.
(see 848 forum= 130 @ the wheel) i've made some posts there)

It can be done this guy has done it !

http://durbahn.de/Web%201098.htm

he is crazy mad you should see what he's doing to a Desmo16RR?

also check out his 999

There is a guy around my area who put the silence into his 996 clutch a few years ago.

He used an 851 cast aluminum cover. He drilled and tapped a 6mm screw on the lower portion to serve as a drain point. Another at the top to serve as a fill point. He put about 100cc of oil in the cavity. The clutch didn't slip a bit.

Virtually quiet. He'd change this oil when he changed the engine oil. Makes me think about doing it as I just spent $$$ for a new clutch.
