suzuki marauder 800 idles too high?

i have an 01 suzuki marauder 800. its cold blooded and i always have to use the choke to get it to start up (as i heard all these types of bikes are). before being ridden with the engine cooler it seem to idle good. but once you take it for a ride for even a few miles the engine seems to run pretty warm and you can feel it giving off heat from about a foot away. also when warm after a ride it idles a lot faster (dont have a tachometer but i would say 50-75% faster). if you shut it off let it cool and start it again it idles slow again. also when i shut it off it occasionally back fires although not too often. is this normal or should i consider lowering the idle speed setting a bit? or something else?
