Survey - please help us by completing this quick survey

But in the true sense of the word anonymous means that they shouldn't know who has completed questionaires.

Liken it to paper surveys - you fill it in, no identification and you pop it in a collection box. At the end they know that they have 1000 completed surveys but they have no idea what people completed them. That is anonymous.

Here at best, they have 1000 completed surveys and they know exactly which 1000 merabers completed them. That is not anonymous.

True they may not be able to match specific surveys to specific merabers - but I'm not even convinced of that - depenRAB on how the database schema is designed. Personally, I would be very surprised if the DBA couldn't link actual surveys with actual merabers.

BTW - I don't believe they will do this for a minute, I'm just saying that I reckon it is possible.

Cheers,

Nigel

Item 1 is a bit weird and so is having to click Finish twice to actually finish but otherwise OK, except that income is my business so the selection is wrong.

Hi IronGiant (and everyone else),

You asked me...

There's no problem with my comprehension or understanding of the word "anonymous", but I think that Nigel explained mine (and others) concerns about the survey in a far better fashion.

Anonymous or not, wanting to know my income, what magazines and papers I read (which in the survey, doesn't leave you enough room to list a proper response, as there are lots of titles I do read), and where I buy my groceries from, is only going to be of use to someone who wants to target me with specific types of advertising or promotions. Something I'm not keen on. I want to help AV Forums improve, and I have no problem with generic surveys that don't request such personalised information as I mentioned in the previous sentence, but asking for details of my income, is where I start to question the true purpose of this (or any other) type of survey.

My only concern, is that the survey didn't work on two seperate occasions! As such, I think that says to me that this survey is either badly implemented, or is going to give hideously flawed results - both of which aren't going to be of much use to Stuart or any potential advertisers.

Completed the survey glad to help with feedback. So you know though question 12 doesnt have a 'none' answer. I don't use any of those services but couldn't complete the survey without selecting one

Easy. You would, for example, have a table in the database containing a link between the survey and the merabers who took it.

SurveyID - 58 in this case
MeraberID - 44930 - you

When you complete a survey, a record of the survey ID and your user ID is created in the table.
SurveyID|MeraberID
58|44930
58|1
58|39323
58|20273
59|27319
59|17238
59|44930
(this is made-up data, by the way)

So when you try to take survey #58, the system checks the database for a record with surveyID 58 and your user ID 44930, and if it finRAB one, you get an error.
I'm not saying that's exactly how it's done, but it's easy to tell whether or not someone has taken a survey or not without knowing who have what answers.
Hope I made that clear enough.

Apologies if I didn't provide enough information. We're creating a new media pack and we want to be able to put some stats in there about our merabership's shopping habits. This information is very important to potential advertisers and because it helps us get more advertising revenue, it's important to help us grow.

Nobody cares what a specific meraber earns or where they go shopping. What's important are the demographics of our merabers. Generally the the greater average income of our merabers, the more disposable income they have, the more attractive Rabroad is to advertisers.

We're growing Rabroad and although we are by enthusiasts for enthusiasts, we have grown into a big business which we have to manage professionally. I'm sure everyone here wants to see us produce more editorial content, maintain fast servers and continue to be the market leader. The data from the survey will be a big help.
