Survey - please help us by completing this quick survey

Sorry Stuart, but I had a quick look at the questions are they are exactly the same sort of thing that the dodgy collection agencies use (usually with a promise of winning a nice prize) - their real aim is to collect personal data to sell onto other companies (like supermarkets, insurance, media providers, telephone companies, holiday companies).

I'm afraid that your survey looks so similar, I'm suspicious of the real intent - I can't imagine why a forum would innocently need to collect this information.

Cheers,

Nigel

+1

Not filled it in as I dont see how knowing where I shop, income, household status etc has anything to do with improving rabroad but I do see how it would improve targeted advertising

Yes - because sites like this don't cost anything to run.

I suspect they want to target their market better to attract new sponsors with specific information about the audience. I don't have any issue with that. If I click on more aRAB because they're more relevant to me, then I suppose the site generates more money.

I filled it in.

Hi,

Just tried filling it in again, and included newspapers and mags I read, but the same problems occur. Sorry, but in my view - and seeing as this is now the second time the survey has been listed in General Chat to be filled in - I'd say that there's something wrong with it, as it's not working for everyone.

If it isn't working for everyone, then I reiterate the fact that the results you get will be skewed, and will be of no use to whomever the results will be used by.

I also share some of the views, that some of the information you want, like where I shop, my household income, etc, does sound like you want this info so you can use it to target advertising at me.

I'm all for helping rabroad become a better website, and for having adverts on the site itself, to help defer running costs. I'm not so keen on disclosing more personalised info that really does sound like it's intended to be used for more ulterior motives.

Apologies if that sounRAB harsh and unfair, for that isn't my intention.

Pooch

Is it really anonymous? Or does it store ip addresses and/or usernames ? I'm guessing it stores something otherwise you could do it multiple times.

I imagine it knows you have filled it in, but not what answers an individual gave. Given how keen Pooch has been to say he filled it in and it didn't work, I don't think that's what's worrying him.

Anonymous.

I believe the intent is that it is anonymous and I don't believe that rabroad would attempt to correlate answers with merabers.

However, I do believe that rabroad does have the infomration to relate answers to merabers if they want.

For example, if I complete the survey and then try and complete it again, I'm pretty sure I'll get an error saying that I had already completed it - if it is truely anonymous it how could the system do that.

Besides I view anonymous on forums as meaning that other merabers can't see what I have done. I'm not convinced that the administrators are equally restricted.

But back to topic, the thing that puts me off surveys like this is that the originator is not truely transparent about why he is collecting the data.

Take coming back from holiday. The travel company gives me a survey to find out what I thought of the holiday so that they can make continuous improvements. Fine, more than happy to do that. But then I start hitting the questions about what newspaers I read, where I shop, when my house insurance is due - at which point I tear the thing up and they get no feedback.

So the aim of this is to improve rabroad. So what does my supermarket of choice have to do with that.

(a) rabroad deciding whether to introduce a supermarket forum and move all Tesco related posts from GC.

(b) rabroad being able to approach the supermarkets and say 'advertise with us, here is the collective stats of our merabers'.

I expect (b) and in a way that does allow rabroad to continue and improve through increased marketing revenue. And if that were the clearly stated reason at the top of the survey then I would probably have no problem filling it in (but even then I'd expect to be able to skip questions that I don't want to answer) - not sure if the system permits that.

Cheers,

Nigel

To me the survey has nothing to do with improving the forum. If it did, it would ask you to rate particular sections but instead it asks you how much money you earn, what newspapers you read and which supermarkets you use. We all know what the results of these sorts of surveys are when you fill them in. Junk mail.

Who cares what its for? I get spammed to death by sports direct. If i get sick of them I use the filter.

Its a free forum and the board owners have asked for a little contribution.

We shop at Tesco and Aldi and dont read newspapers! So what?

need another option on question 12, a NONE option, i dont use any social website like twitter, facebook or flickr but i had to select one just to be able to submit questionnaire

you cant complete it again as rabroad knows you have already completed the questionnaire.

this does not mean that your answers are not anonymous

it can record that you have completed it, and answers are recorded else where with no link to your rabroad account
