Surround Sound / Synch Question

Couple of questions:

1. I just got set up for HD. It looks way better than my old SD channels, so I am happy. BUT I notice that almost all the HD channels have the video and audio slightly out of synch. What can I do about this? For connections, I have an HDMI cable carrying the video and audio from the 6131 receiver to my tv, then a digital coax cable carrying the audio to my yamaha surround sound receiver. I am probably gonna switch this last connection to digital optical ... maybe that will make a diff. Any ideas?

2. I set up a surround sound system when I got the HD. Most of the HD channels seem to use surround sound, and it works great. Do any of the old SD channels use surround sound? My receiver always reverts back to mono or stereo when I go down to the old SD channels. Also, why isn't there a direct digital audio out from the 6131? Becasuse it lacks this, I have to first route the audio to the tv, and then from the tv to the surround sound receiver. I have read that you lose a bit of quality for every device you pass through.

1. Do a search of the BTV forums for "synch". Plenty of previous threads on this topic which is a "known issue". Here's a relevant link:

2. Here's the FAQ on DD5.1 - not much DD5.1 on SD. You cannot typically go "through" a TV and preserve DD5.1, as indicated in the bolding of the FAQ. Doesn't the 6131 have optical and/or coaxial audio?

concerning "surround sound", i am pretty sure that my LG tv can pass through DD5.1, as it works great after it's been passed to the surround sound receiver using digital coax. the receiver shows icons of all 5 active speakers, and also, the sound is completely separated when watching 5,1 HD channels. i know what surround sounds "sounds like" and this setup does it.

BUT apparently my 6131 receiver does have a digital optical out .... so i'll just hook it up directly to the receiver. direct is better.

Yeah, my LG will send 5.1 digital sound to my audio receiver also, which would be great for distributing the audio except for one thing. It has audio sync problems so I run it direct from my 9242 via optical, which is also a little out of sync, but not so badly.

I bought some optical cables from ebay, and am waiting for them. I will hook up the audio directly from the sat dish receiver (6131) to my yamaha receiver. I notice the synch probs on almost all hd channels, so hopefully bypassing the tv will improve this. And, less cables to deal with.
