surround sound / stereo?

Do home theaters from JVC, Philips, Samsung or Panasonic with integrated DVD player & receiver play only surround mode? What I wanna know is that, is there a provision for a surround sound/ stereo switchability too? I have read some specs & they say - sound output : Surround mode. This is confusing.........
 
It depends on the specific model, but almost all surround systems have a way to select stereo mode only.

But I find that using a surround mode like Dolby Pro Logic II on stereo music sources provides a far better listening experience. It transforms stereo sources into a sound field that is much more enveloping and realistic.
