You will not believe this...I arrive at the hospital at 6:00 am. I have had so many sleepless nights it's amazing I can even function. So I get changed into my gown and lay down. Put on my beautiful white hose :) We all love those!!! The nurse has me sign all my paperwork. I have all of my banRAB on. Panic attack #1 big time freak out. Breathe breathe breathe. Okay now it's time for my IV. No biggie I went through IVF, me and needles have a love hate relationship. They don't freak me out at all. So the nurse starts to prepare and she uses the nurabing spray (don't let them do that ask for the little stick as it nurabs a heck of a lot better) she is digging around while trying to talk to me about Jon and Kate + 8. Finally I tell her she has to stop. She isn't going to find it. So another nurse comes in meanwhile the nuero lady has arrived to start sandpaper my skin away so they electrodes will stick. It feels like a light rug burn I have about 16 on different parts of my body. It's a way to monitor my nerves and to make sure the doctor doesn't even get close (kind of neat and cool and reassuring). The second nurse actually uses the little needle to nurab before putting in an IV and what do you know ...boom she gets it. The nurse leaves and the neuro lady leaves. A couple of minutes later, they start the antibiotic and the nurse says "this means it will be real soon now". So I have my second panic attack. Now about 10 minutes later, I am in the middle of my third panic attack when my doctor walks in...I am thinking...okay here we go we are going to talk for a sec sign off on a few things and I will finally get my cocktail. Well the doctor said he had the flu and he was going to have to cancel the surgery. I was in shock...I couldn't believe it. I mean I don't want a sick doctor to operate on me but come on. If you wake up with the flu or if you have a fever. Don't come in to work. ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE A SURGEON!!!!! I feel bad for the first person. It was a small surgery probably a Discogram or Injection but they are at risk for infection I would think. Anyway, I am rescheduled for Monday the 9th so think happy thoughts!!!!

Well I thought my problems leading up to my scheduled and cancelled 4X for fusion surgery was bad...(it was) but nothing like THIS...unacceptable..you mean to tell me while they spend time poking around in your hand for the IV they had no inkling the DR was sick???...I am so sorry..this is unacceptable and unfair mental anguish on top of the regular stress of preparing for surgery...I agree with my friend Devon on this...just bad form...lets hope your Monday goes as planned...maybe a call into the Dr's BEFORE you get there might work as how the Dr is doing might help...I am just sorry to hear anyone go thru that...

Wow! I cannot even imagine that happening!!!! But, at least he has the right of mind to not start your surgery being so sick.

I'm so sorry to hear you had to go all through that for nothing...especailly getting the IV...gesh...they could have at least let you have your cocktail and then tell you..JK LOL....I know the feeling of getting psyced (spelling?) up and the nerves, I had the same surgery and I was past scarred. They also had a hard time finding my vein, 3 people tried, I was trying no to pay attention to what was happening but you can't. Finally they got it in...I think that is the worse part getting your IV. The story does sound fishy...I mean come on he's a doctor didn't he know that he had the flu when he got up that day, he had to come to the hospital and spread his germs to how many others! I hope you have a better experience on Monday. I would insist that the person who was able to get your IV in be the one to do it again for you.

Good Luck with your surgery...let us know how it goes...Marie

Hi all.............

I could NOT imagine being in your shoes. Sheesh..........I agree with all the replies. It was not right..... What the heck was that doctor thinking? Why couldn't he just call the hospital EARLY so that they couldv'e contacted you before you arrived? And then getting as far as the IV.....oh my!!!!!! I wouldve been biting my tongue LOL Maybe I wouldve let loose too? LOL I am like most all of you about IV's........I have teeny tiny veins and it hurts....just plain hurts to get an IV. Very few times has it NOT hurt LOL

I am so sorry this happened to you.....I put myself in your shoes in my thoughts and I had to reply....take care girl and I hope all works out for the best for you!!!!!!

10sox: Did you pain get significantly worse after all of your IVF/Baby stuff? After my baby was born, it went from occasional to all of the time. I wonder if the infertility drugs might have done something to my bones. I don't know, maybe it was all of the baby stuff but it just seems ironic and I have heard about estrogen messing with bones and stuff. How did yours turn out? We were rewarded with one little boy (who isn't so little anymore-now 4). I am hanging in here :)

Thanks all for the positive responses. I am right now sitting with a low grade fever 99.8. My son also has a fever so I am sure I got it from him and not the doc as I only saw the doc for about a minute. Anyway, it was for the best because I most likely would have had the flu while recovering. That usually happens. I have a bit of a headache and no appetite. So I think the big guy upstairs was really looking out for me.

I will keep you all posted and again thanks for all of the responses :)

Ohh, I'm sorry! How hard to have yourself all psyched up and ready to go and have the brakes put on at the very last minute!

Well, you never know. Maybe you'll have a better result by waiting. It will certainly be better to have a healthy doctor!

Hang in there!

Emily

That sure was a blessing you don't need to be sick when you are recovering from a major surgery like this, please wait until you are feeling well enough and then reschedule your surgery. I wish you the best of luck and hope you are feeling well soon!

That was very tacky!....was he not sick when he woke up that day?....6 am?? I think his buddy challenged him to a golf game! lol....I would use another doc if it was me....that is very wrong! I mean if he all the sudden had chest pains I can understand...but the flu...?? I dont play those games....Im soooo sorry you went through this...How terrible....I would even buy it if he said I just dont feel up to doing this surgery....everyone has a bad day....the sudden flu dont jive with me....I guess it could happen but did he not know 30 or 45 minutes ago to at least tell you? If you were to cancel the surgery Im sure you would have called at least a day in advance...??!!

Im done.....sorry this just went all over me.

I hope when you do have your surgery its as pleasant as can be...good luck!

Devon
