It wasn't really strength that was the issue with the plane. In fact, it was his strength that became a problem when he ripped off the wing, and I think it's fair to say lifting the island took a little bit more out of him than dealing with the plane. The kryptonite only affected him once he had reached space, as it grew out of the bottom of the island. I think that worked just fine.

He just neeRAB to be in the vicinity of Kryptonite in order for it to affect him, and here was a whole island!
With the plane: He could have put the fire out with his superbreath. He should have known that holding the wing was 'not' a good idea!
AND it soooo reminded me of that Bugs Bunny cartoon where he's on a plane and a gremlin puts it into a tail spin and they fall for like 2 minutes, and Bugs applies the breaks just inches from the ground! :eek:

I just don't see Lex Luthor being released from jail on a technicallity. He's supposed to make a subatomic blaster out of a bar of soap!

Did we watch the same film??? The last half hour was one long action sequence never mind the shuttle rescue and all the stuff that surrounded the museum robbery! Spiderman 1 and 2 were the same by comparison I'd say.
 
All I could find about these new Superman DVD was this on DVDActive website but it doesnt include any offical specs:

"Warner Home Video has announced a number of brand new Superman releases - all of which star the legendary Christopher Reeve. Available from November 28th will be a four-disc release of Superman: The Movie (which includes both the 1978 and 2001 extended editions along with Donner commentary and archival footage of additional scenes and screen tests), Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut which includes the film as it was originally conceived and intended to be filmed (includes a new never-before-seen beginning, a never-before-seen resolution with 15 minutes of restored footage, and more), and deluxe editions of both Superman III and IV. Also available from the 28th November will be a Christopher Reeve Superman Collection which includes all of the above, apart from the Donner Cut of Superman II. This will retail at $79.92. We'll bring you further details, and the official artwork - shortly. Stay tuned."
 
I'm didn't give me the same magical cinema experience I had as a 10 year old in 1978 believing a man could fly IMO.
Watching the first superman film made me feel like a child on christmas eve. The new film provoked little or no emotional respose from me.I know age, marriage,bringing up children and a 40hour working week makes people cynical ,but after 28 years or so i wanted to feel like a kid again,....... just for a few hours.
 
Yeah its bizzare the last of the Reeves Superman came out in 1987 the year I was born. And thus the start of the generation that demand to be entertained began!

Im sure for me if Superman is still knocking around in 20 years Ill understand how you feel!
 
No Im serious you really no your stuff and its refreshing instead of people like me who piece what I can from the internet etc and wear the Superman T-Shirt and call myself a "fan" when Im nowhere near your vast knowledge!!! I tried getting the comics once but it was off the internet (IrelanRAB comic book stores are non existent even newsagents sell crappy collection editions) and was far too confusing (stories spreading into different titles not sold by the site etc!) so I gave up but with 3 years till my next movie fix I might take a chance again!!!

Oh and BTW you are very clever you figured out my dasterdly plan I must try to out fox you!!!!! :D :D :D

LOL! Damien? Good call :) I actually liked little Jason, but there was one scene in the pantry that made him seem kinda creepy.

Anyway, I agree it was a great scene with the boat. The way Superman was holding them with one hand and the boat with the other before dropping it was really nicely staged, and Routh looked every bit the Superman Reeve was in the short clip just as he drops the boat. Superman's acceptance of the situation seems to be lost on some people, though, not just in this scene. I have heard people claim Supes gets Lois in the end. Seriously.

I don't really buy that. There just wasn't enough motivation for Kitty to suddenly grow a conscience.

A better Lois? Impossible. She was already a weak imitation of the wonderful Eve Teschmacher. I don't think Posey did a particularly bad job, the part was just poorly written.

Singer himself calls it his first "chick flick", but melodrama might describe it too. I don't think it was his intention, he was probably aiming for more balance, but he probably just doesn't do action all that well. I didn't think the action in the X-Men movies was anything special either, and they were mostly carried by the characters as well.

Yes, that's more or less the conclusion I came to too. It's the kind of Superman you might have found in an Elseworld comic, and thought it was really quite good, but establishing itself so firmly in the Donner universe makes it more than a little surprising that the tone is so different.

You know, I quite liked the "homerun" bit. At least we get the sense that the people of Metropolis are living, breathing people with personalities, as opposed to SR's mindless CGI creatures who have apparently not been programmed to speak, and can only stare in slack-jawed awe at their saviour, creating a sort of divide between the people and their supposedly beloved hero. In S1 & 2, you felt the connection between the people and Superman. People thanked him, waved at him, commented on his heroics, and he would respond with a smile, a friendly comment, and even had a few zingers for the villains as well. It was fun.

I always found her extremely annoying and unattractive, particularly her filthy smoking habit. I was totally with Ursa when she commented that "what an undemanding male this Superman must be" :)

Heh, I always wondered if that was really intentional.

I was also thinking that since Singer and Donner are so chummy, I wonder if Donner's new S2 might correct a few continuety errors, and dispense with the super-kiss, and actually make S2 a proper prequel to SR.
 
It's not actual confirmation of a sequel, but it's certainly getting closer, but that has never really been in doubt, as far as I'm concerned.

The official release date has not been announced. The 4-12 date is just a guess so far.
 
It's not explained in the movie, of course, but given that he's resistant to kryptonite, it seems safe to assume that being half-human and half-kryptonian, his powers are of a very different nature. Could be adrenaline induced, like the Hulk, judging by how they kicked in. Or maybe he got his inhaler from a Spanish doctor? :)
Given that the movie is out now, can we dispense with the spoiler tags?
 
As a non-Superman fan I was wondering if anyone can tell me how accessible the film is. My obsessed boyfriend has booked tickets for the weekend and I'm a little concerned that either I'll fall asleep and drool on him therefore ending my relationship or just be completely confused!
 
Encyclopaedic knowledge is by no means a requirement to be considered a fan. A t-shirt is a good place to start :)

Yes, the criss-crossing storylines really hurt the accessibility of the comics these days. There are some good Superman collections in trade paperback, though. If you're mostly familiar with the movie version of Superman, I would probably recommend Jeph Loeb's recent, excellent "Superman & Batman" trade paperbacks. The series was originally released as a monthly title a few years ago, but TPB's are just an easier read. I think there are four out so far, and they're pretty cheap. They're called "Public Enemies", "Supergirl", "Absolute Power" and "Vengeance". Loeb used to be a producer on Smallville, and his comics, while still in comic book continuety, have many references and homages to the movies, and since the series is quite new, it provides an excellent jumping-on point and a chance to become familiar with the modern Superman universe.

If you want to stray outside regular continuety a little, another excellent Loeb story is the "Superman For All Season" mini-series. A really cool little 4-parter about the early days of Superman, when he just started out.

A very different type of story is Kurt Busiek's "Secret Identity". Despite being extremely out of continuety, it's one of the most "pure" Superman comics I have ever read. 4 issues too, as I recall, and like "For All Seasons", it has a beginning, a middle, and an end, so you don't have to commit to an on-going series.

Another sort of origin story is Mark Waid's "Superman: Birthright". Not a personal favorite of mine, but very popular with most fans, and by many considered the definitive Superman origin story. 12 issues TPB.

And finally, John Byrne's modern relaunch of Superman can be found in the "Superman: Man of Steel" collections, with stories and art by a few other excellent writers and artists as well, but the premise of the reboot was all Byrne.

And just to get back on topic, stay as far away from the comic book adaptation of Superman Returns as you can. It's very, very bad.
 
I agree with some parts of your post mainly "Its done move on" BUT the kid thing was the only thing that I hated on my first viewing (which became OK in the 2nd) Id like a bit of clarification NOT as a fan but as a movie lover. Singer should realise that this thing confused a heck of a lot of people ESPECIALLY non fans (EVERY person I told that Superman had a son said "Superman cant have kiRAB hes an alien!" etc or something very similar) I understand that this may not be the case but if Singer has the sense he will come to the conclusion that all this fuss over conception and possibility of Superman producing a child with an earth female can be cleared up in a few lines of dialogue then he can move on to the most important parts.

I just think it can easily sorted but will become a bigger issue if he refuses to clarify it thus pi$$ing off a lot of people in general which will reduce revenue and will force WB to do something stupid!

If Singer wont answer it I have a feeling WB will.
 
Just seen it tonight. Thought the first two thirRAB were very good. The plane sequence is excellent.

The last third is an absolute shambles. It drags, it looks ropey, it has Superman on a gurney getting wheeled into hospital.... It's a travesty. The Lex Luthor plot culminates in him making a really big rock and the hospital sequence becomes slapstick - oh look he breaks the needle, oh look he breaks the resus unit, I was praying nobody was going to suggest an x-ray.

I spent the first ten minutes after the film discussing with my frienRAB the point at which the film lost the plot. Our best guess is the Spacey line "Who is his father?". After that, pianos start flying and the film falls to pieces.

What a waste.

I haven't seen it, but it's getting slaughtered by the critics. I think it averages around 50% on rottentomatoes with Superman at 75% last I checked. Still, Pirates seems like the classic, brain-dead summer blockbuster. Before Superman came out, I predicated that it would only take around $250 million at the box office and lose out to Pirates by around $100 million. Looks like I was a little bit off, certainly with the gap between the two movies, but still pretty close compared to those who thought Superman would match Spidey and Titanic. To me, SR looked great, but there was a definite air of King Kong about it, and the fact that it turned out a little less great than I expected could account for the $50 million discrepancy in my prediction :) The box office projections vary a little every day, depending on who you ask, but it looks like it might just crack $200 million now.

I think it was stupid it became the issue it did, but it was an aspect of the movie I thought was far too heavy-handed.

I actually don't know yet. I have a small army of Superman fans, some far more emotionally unstable about the whole thing than you :), and I usually rely on them to keep me up to date with the latest news, so I will just sit back and wait for the links to come rolling into my inbox, but I would have thought supermanhomepage would get some news early. Maybe fanboyplanet too or comics continuum.

Just want to say first that I wasnt being serious eggshell I was a bit stunned that one of my favourite movies EVER was being compared to a quite crappy Superman III!!!

I really like this movie for what this is. I admit at the start I HATED THE KID but I like the general theme of the movie now.

I do like the "stalking" scene purely because of the fact that Superman gets a reality call in the way that he may be Super but it doesnt mean he get what he wants (Lois who doesnt really care to begin with) and I love the line "Not like this" Im sorry I dont see the problem with these scenes.

Im willing to accept this movie as what it is and I love it!!!!!

BTW Tenacious G what the hell is an Elseworld comic?

Well we seem to be pretty much in agreement on this film which is a bit of a life line for my sanity. I can buy Superman fans who live and breathe this character liking the film because it is a "What If" kind of story but I am frankly amazed at the critical kudos this film has gotten.

Sometimes though the critics seem to go for film making skill and ignore the piece around connecting with your audience.
 
Actually it was addressed logically way back in 1986 when John Byrne took Superman back to his basics :) .

As Superman he would continually 'vibrate' at a rate that when someone tried to take a picture/video, he would appear as a blur.
Thus no one could make comparisons between him and Clark Kent.
Kinda neat really :cool:

(He didn't throw his clothes away after changing as well! :eek: He kept them compressed in his cape (not the shoes!). ANOTHER cool move! (he ain't rich ya know! :)))

I think the problem with Superman is that a few writers give him a brain, and many others do not.
 
Positives

I liked how they got Superman back to earth again
Brandon Routh was very much like Christopher Reeves and excellent in the role.
The plane rescue was good when earth was getting closer and closer.
Parts of the film were clearly inspired by the 50's comics and this was done very well.

Negatives

Lois Lane was way too young, a Pulitzer prize winner???
The confusion - does it follow on from Superman 2 or doesn't it? or just bits, no wonder there is confusion
Superman spent far too long getting match fit after kryptonite
Throwing the new rock into space, what was that all about?
How did the helicopter that Richard was flying get to the new island so fast?
There was at least one ending added to the film, making it too long. If you watch again, when they focus on Luther on the deserted island, it goes dark, leaving parts of the film on a cliffhanger - clearly that was the original ending.
Parts of the film felt like a soap opera.
