Superman Returns

I finally get to see this movie last weekend and i enjoyed every second of it. It was real fun, a whole lot better then Spiderman. In my opinion i think spiderman is weak compared to superman, i mean superman can fly and has more strength then spider man. I am so excited for the superman returns sequel, currently listed on www.imdb.com directed by bryan singer again. :)

I was puzzled by the kryptonite thing. I was under the impression that Superman was supposed to show signs of stress when he came into contact with the green stuff. But when he first went to the island the first sign of anything being wrong was when Luthor punched him.

BTW, would it help to have a thread which says in the title that there are spoilers then we wouldn't need to bother using the tag?

It seems more like a mix of disbelief and relief. Superman has been gone for 5 years, and for all she knows, she's about to punch her ticket when she sees a streak of red and blue hope hope rush by the window.

It was a reference to the 1940s Superman cartoons by Fleischer Studios, which have some amazingly life-like animation. Back then, Superman couldn't really fly, and instead propelled himself through the air more like a human glider, and it was a very physical and dynamic Superman, reacting to the elements and obstacles, and we saw a bit of that in the plane sequence. If you haven't seen the Fleischer toons, they're an absolute must. You can download them legally, as they're so old the rights have expired, and they're now public domain.

I wasn't too crazy about that. It was certainly dramatic, but I thought they went too far with Superman's kicking and screaming. It was a little undignified for the Man of Steel, even under the influence of kryptonite.

Lois took some good shots and lived to tell about it. The thug who tried to kill her also rammed her head a few times, as I recall.

To me, it completely outstayed its welcome and became far too lame. I'll tune in by the time they get to the series finale, but beyond that, I'm not that interested.

Yes, it seems to get better with each viewing.

Yes, I think there was roughly a $50 million difference in the budget, and SR was of course unfairly expected to carry the financial burdens of WB's many non-starters over the last decade or so, so from the studio's point of view, SR needed to cover more financial ground, but in terms of audience response, SR compares favorably to Batman Begins.

On a technical level, I would probably agree. I thought Batman Begins missed badly on many levels, but it was somewhat consistent. Superman had some great highs, much higher than Batman's best, but also had some depressing pitfalls. In the final analysis, I much prefer Superman Returns. I only saw Batman Begins twice, and the second viewing felt like a chore, while each new Superman viewing gave me new-found appreciation for certain aspects of the movie, but at the end of the day, neither movie was as good as it should have been, and hopefully both will improve with the sequel(s).

I thought it was just OK - loved the fact that they used to original music but seemed too long - be interesting to see if they do a follow up I think it won't maintain it's box office figures for very long

Watched it 3 times over the weekend and I absolutely love the film.

Thought it was great from the opening credits onwarRAB (good to hear the John Williams theme again). Kevin Spacey was a very good Luthor (less comedic than Gene Hackman) and I thought Brandon Routh was good as Superman considering what he had to live up to.

Wasn't too keen on Mr Williams getting the speedest credit ever, though.....

Ah. this is making me want to watch it all over again.

Think I'll do that tonight :)

My friend mum's friend's went to see Superman Returns in the cinema and they thought it was rubbish they was close to walking out .
I havnt seen the film though so i dunno if it's good or not?.

WOW! So you were one of the first to see it over here then? Id klike to see it a lot of times as well but I have to pace myself or Ill be really bored with it by the time of DVD release (which will be well worn out in a few days after mulitple viewings that I have planned!) I saw it for the 2nd time today and I hope to go again tommorow and maybe once more after that! 3 times in one day? Thats hardcore what was that like?

On the subject of the DVD I honestly cannot believe that there will be NO extended version ie putting things in where they were meant to be not a few extra scenes I know Id fork out the cash for it (Id be willing to pay quite a bit more TBH!) Maybe they are saying no until we all buy the film and then bring out the extended edition so we wil all buy it again?

Well I have seen it again today and it confirms a lot for me

a)It has to be one of the BEST movies of this year!
b)It has to be one of my fave movies EVER!
c)John Ottman's score is absolutely SUBLIME!

Through the movie I couldnt over how good it sounded (didnt notice much last time too busy not blinking!) If Superman Returns has a realistic chance of being nominated and winning any major award this year (my eye is on the oscar!) it has to be for best score! Nothing short of incredible! So much so I had to buy the CD one of the few pieces of merchandise that isnt rubbish!(BTW Ive never ever bought a soundtrack to a film before!) Though I know some of it was down to John Williams(and after all the fuss I made a special effort to see his name and it flew by!)

I must admit I enjoyed it more this time! Mainly due to the fact that I had cleared up all the things that had stunted my enjoyment the first time (Mainly the kid issue!) Therefore I was more willing to just enjoy it take it as is and ignore all the flaws! It was so enjoyable that Kate Bosworth has started to increase in popularity as Lois for me! I think you hit the nail on the head earllier when you said that everbody was expecting Lois to be swinging from the rooftops a l

I didn't say it wasn't huge, just that because of the popularity of the first three and near 20 year gap, people were never going to enjoy the movie, most fans hate it, me included. How could it have lived up to the original Star Wars ? ( A New Hope)

I remember lining up for 2 hours in '78 to catch the original Superman, how on earth can that feeling be recaptured for me now 25 years have passed?

I don't agree on age demographic either, the real blockbusters reach and are aimed at all ages, Titanic, Star Wars, Jaws, LOTR, ET, and the maybe biggest blockbuster of all time if you take inflation into account - Gone With the Wind. Also from a marketing perspective - which demographic has the most disposable income?

Ive just been to see it and spent most of the time drooling over Superman/Brandon Routh, much to my husbanRAB disgust.

My mates girlfriend kept saying 'I don't get it' which really annoyed me especially as I also found out she has never seen the originals - why go and see a continuation of a story when you haven't seen the backstory????????????

Anyway, I really enjoed it apart from one thing - Lois Lane. Kate Bosworths acting was fine but the character just wasn't spunky enough which all previous lois's have been - even the one in Smallville. I felt she was a bit drippy.

Yes, the Superman Returns toys are barely selling at all, but then, Superman toys never did particularly well with kiRAB.

Yes, this felt very much like a dark ElseworlRAB story. From the moment I saw the first real trailer, I thought this was going to be tough to sell, and a confused promotional compaign and the fact that the movie was a little bit hit'n-miss didn't help.

It's a real shame. The heavy-handed Jesus stuff was quite off-putting, bordering on fan-fiction at times, but there were so many wonderful moments in the movie, I'm very conflicted about it. It's not the Superman I had wanted or hoped for, but I still found it very interesting.

I disagree. I actually watched S4 recently, and I thought Reeve was a pale imitation of himself. He looked weak and unsure of himself, even his body language in several scenes was completely different from the majestic Superman of previous movies.

Spot on. Much as I liked the plane scene in SR, it just didn't have the same flow and excitement of S1's helicopter scene, which is one of my favorite cinematic moments of all time, and was only marred by Kidder's insane performance. Bosworth's Lois was far more dignified and calm under pressure. Either way, I very much doubt the SR sequence will stand the test of time as well as the helicopter rescue did.

Awww, it was going so well, and then you brought up Spielberg, who is responsible for some of the most vapid, stomach-churning, emotionally manipulative cinematic sewage. I'll just pick up from the sequence lacking punch, which it certainly did. Well, maybe not so much punch as just a pay-off.

Whoh, whoa, whoa, settle down. Don't want you saying something you'll regret in the morning when the booze wears off :) S3 had its moments, I'll grant you that, but better than SR? That's just crazy talk. My first impression of SR was quite negative as well, but once I got over the fact that it wasn't Superman The Movie, I started appreciating it for what it actually was, and after 4 viewings, I was really quite happy with it. Hmm, isn't that how people describe their first experiences of smoking?

I'm very much looking forward to this, and it will be interesting to see just how different it really is. I have to say, the clips I have seen didn't seem like that much of an improvement, and reports of how much new footage is included varies wildly.

Am I the only one hoping Donner in hinRABight realised what a pain Kidder was, and that Lois actually goes SPLAT!!!?

Hi people. Just been to see Superman Returns with the wife; we thought it was exellent and a great way to chill out for a couple of hours. It's only a movie so I'm not going to scrutinize it like some people like to but I would say the ending was slightly too long.
