I think once or twice the 14th Nov has been rumoured.
It will be part of a DVD 14 disk set known has The Superman Ultimate Collection, and will consist of all 4 original movies, plus 2 alternate versions of superman 2, superman returns, some cartoon version & rumoured to include Supergirl.
However, supergirl keeps getting deleted & readded so maybe it won't or will be included lol.
Yeah I spose thats true, the moron interviewer should have definately followed that one up!!!
Unfortunately I seem to always fall into the wrong place regarding the net!!!!DAMN IT!!! Though I have to admit Id rather be in a pretty positive place like BlueTights (where there are a lot of happy people!) than SuperHeroHype where Spidey fans are a dime a dozen and even the Superman section feels like anything but! Which do you prefer? Are you on any of them? Im on BT as monkeyking87 (I couldnt be bothered making up a new name and password!!)
Im definately in the camp that thinks that it doesnt look anything like a 200million movie (as I have said in some of my first posts regarding the movie) some of the effects look awful shoddy. I dont understand as to why WB would inflate their figures? Surely it would make sense to be honest and be able to show the haters and indeed the rest of the world how good that the movie performed for them?
There is absolutely no way Bosworth will be re-cast. That would be complete creative capitulation from WB.
Superman is just difficult to write. Writers of the live-action series and animated shows constantly talk about the difficulties dealing with a guy that not only has an incredible range of powers, but whose boyscout attitude can be difficult to combine with an interesting personality. When good writers from time to time pull it off, Superman is a magnificent character, but when they miss, he comes across as extremely lame. It's much easier to write a Batman or a Woverine character. Team Singer's effort was a noble one, and it worked on many levels, I just don't think people care all that much for an interpretation of Superman that sees him more as a Christ-like figure than an all-American guy who just happens to be able to fly.
It's like waiting for Christmas morning, isn't it? Grey socks or a shiny new bike. The suspense is unbearable
I wouldn't worry about there not being another movie. The Hulk was a total critical and commercial flop but there's a sequel in the works for that, and for Fantastic Four, which was just shite. I have a suspicion that Singer will not be directing it though.
I just think that Singer didn't really push the envelope far enough with this film. It recycles it's main plot eg Luthor's land deal, it's absurdly long (why are so many films padded out like this nowadays?) and Superman spenRAB much of the film being depressed, or at least not having much fun. When you think of the adversaries such as Doomsday, Darkseid and Braniac, and the technology available to todays filmakers, you realise how much bigger in scope and adventure this film could have been. I don't think its a bad film, by any means - I think its pretty good - but it could have been an absolute classic. And if the budget gets slashed for the next one that is bad, bad news.
Heh, somebody getting cut off means there usually an 80-90% chance it would be Fox Thanks for the link. That segment was so American, it was bordering on parody.
Superman has always been an American icon, and it's fair enough that they want to safeguard that, but these days "the American way" and Superman's values just seem a little less compatible.
The plane sequence, by a long way. It was just magnificent. Great score too, and I love the part where Lois sees Superman come rushing past the plane out of the corner of her eye. Margot Kidder would have no doubt done that scene kicking and screaming like a maniac. What really works about the plane sequence is the physicality of it. Superman's flying has an almost Fleischer-like dynamic and intensity to it, compared to the more elegant, effortless flying in the rest of the movie. I particularly liked the way he threw himself into the wind and the smoke from the plane, pushing his arms down the sides for added speed.
I also liked the roof top scene a lot.
The first few scenes with Clark returning to the Daily Planet were nice too.
The whole sea plane rescue sequence was very cool, and again, Ottman's score is just magnificent just before Superman takes off again.
My favorite single shot in the movie was probably when Superman rescues Richard, Lois and Jason, and he drops the boat and holRAB them up with the other arm. Great visual, and Routh looks almost as Super as Chris Reeve in that particular shot.
Oh and slightly off topic
As well as Zod and Co, Rayla a colleauge of Jor Els and Green Arrow will be in Smallville this year!!!
Other than the odd episode here and there, I haven't watched Smallville for years. It was never that great, but it lost it badly after season 2, or thereabouts
Yes, that was what the "father in the son" speech was about, and that's why they went to such great lengths to make Richard incredibly sympathetic, so Supes Jr could be raised be good people, like Superman himself was.
I suspect Singer is saying 2009, as that's about as far as he can push it. He knows the movie disappointed, and he won't be able to use the box office figure to negotiate a deal for the sequel, so given that WB probably want the next movie sooner rather than later, he pretenRAB he wants to do a smaller movie first, meaning they have to up their offer for him to go straight to the next Superman.
It's a little bit cheesy, but Superman is essentially a somewhat cheesy character, so I guess it's alright. I't growing on me, but I'm still not completely sold.
A slightly odd basis for a bias, but whatever works for you I haven't watched S3 or S4 for many years, but I'm pretty sure S4 was an absolute abomination, while S3 was just a bit too silly.
Not that again. Believe me, nothing from NA has any bearing whatsoever on SR, and NA enRAB on Lois and Clark finding a baby on their doorstep, which the producers said were intended to be Superman and Lois's child from the future, suggesting they could have a child together.
There's no "true" storyline. Each incarnation of Superman tenRAB to have its own little tweaks. Regardless of what other versions might have suggested, SR's Superman is 100% compatible with humans, as Jason IS his child.
Nope. Given the continuety problems this causes, and that Singer seems to have more or less dismissed the events of S2, it seems more likely that Lois got pregnant by Superman sometime after S1, and that she never learned his secret identity.
The rumors of no sequel have been ridiculously exaggerated, almost purely on the basis on some clueless blogger's speculation that the movie might not hit $200 million. As for Singer, there is a slight chance WB will want at change at the helm, but at the same time, they're desperately trying to put a brave face on this, and Singer is an excellent director, and WB themselves signed off on the vision for this movie. Everybody got it wrong, but I'm not sure they want to admit it in as public a way as ditching Singer. They know he can produce a good movie, they just need to sit down and decide where they miscalculated on the first one. Or just let him do his thing again with a sequel. $200 million in the bag isn't too shabby, it was just that industry expectations were higher, given Superman's status as the one true superhero.
If WB feel like they will be getting the sequel they want, budget won't be a problem, and Singer can make as impressive a sequel for $170-180 million. SR was not a $260 million movie, despite what some people claim.
And some good news to keep monkeyking87 off the ledge. The gap in opening box office between Piratas and Superman was less pronounced in the UK. Pirates opened to
Yeah I like that part too specially when you can imagine what she is thinking "oh sh1t" probably!
Although I dont really have any idea what "Fleischer-style" is I understand what you mean, he looks like hes trying so so hard compared to when he seems to effortlessly glide elsewhere!
I like the scene where Lex beats the crap of Superman on the island because I think we all like to see the hero be beaten down and then rise up again it makes the hero more spectacular!!!!!
100% agree about the boat but was I alone in cringing/hiding behind my hanRAB/thinking "oh christ" when that pantry door swung full force stright onto Lois??
Yeah I agree about Smallville its very hit and miss but S5 has been pretty good(mainly due to the help of the franchise ie Zod etc)) Hopefully theyll make something of it soon though I think to further it on they might have to get him a bit more air-bound now and again to introduce a fresh element!!!
All this talk about fave scenes is making me anxious for Friday to hurry up!!!!!!!!!! Theres a lot of stuff I missed because I was too in awe at the time!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah that is true but it always used to happen in the comics as well so why is everybody so concerned about it now with the film!
I cant wait to see Superman Returns now but I get the feeling it wont be too successful in the UK cinema because of POTC2!
Monkeyking87 I admire your enthusiasm for this film and I wouldn't want to change your mind at all. I felt very much the same about the first Superman film and was probably a bit overly vociferous with people in my enthusiasm for that film at the time.
I do point out that S3 is a turkey, but I will reiterate that there is more of a feel good factor in the face off between Good and Bad Superman in that film than in the entire combined action sequences in SR.
In any event the S3 reference was a bit of a throw away at the end, my main point is this is a dour and dreary "adult" superman which tries to be too clever for its own good and thereby leaves behind the vast amount of its target audience.
The good news though is that there is a decent Superman film coming out this year, its the Richard Donner cut of Superman 2. Take a look at these clips and see what a Superman film is about.
Just for some perspective, expectations weren't particularly high for Batman Begins, and it didn't do much better at the box office than SR. Once the final domestic box office is in, there will probably be around $10 between them, and it looks like Superman's worldwide figures are going to eclipse Batman's, and Superman is better reviewed on rottentomates as well. The only obstacle for a Superman sequel is the high budget of the original, but that's not as big a problem as some people would have you believe. Trust me, there will be a sequel.
I also have a theory behind why this hasn't performed quite as well as expected. Because of the way the film has been marketed, and because of the trend for it these days, I think that alot of people (meaning your average casual Joe Public, not Superman fans or movie buRAB) think this film is a straight re-make of the first Superman film. I've spoken to quite a few people who thought that was the case and are then confused by the kind-of-sequel setup.
The word "Superman" on the movie poster is very prominent and unless you get close up its actually hard to read the word "Returns". I've also seen a couple of cinemas where the film is advertised as simply "Superman" on the outside. Given that this has been a heavy year of re-makes thus far, I think some people will be thinking, 'well I've seen the original so I don't need to see this', or at least wait for it on DVD. Re-makes are in fashion but not making money at the box office, King Kong and Poseidon being notable examples. The vagueness of the marketing behind Superman Returns, eg its not a true sequel, or a remake, or a reboot, I think has been a big factor in its relatively poor showing.
Watched this yesterday, I wasnt that impressed. Nothing really happened all the way through and it was a looooong movie. Im a big comic fan and usually like most of the movie versions but this lacked something.
I am sure there will be a sequel to Superman Returns!
Batman Begins budget I am sure was a lot less than Superman Returns as well so I am sure that will effect the profit the syudio made on Batman Begins. In my own personal option as well Batman Begins is a better film than Superman Returns though!
