(Reported on Ain't it cool news) This morning it's been announced that Brian Singer (The Usual Suspects, X-Men and X2) is the new Director of the new Superman Film ! It says that Brian and his writing team from X2, will continue the Superman story after the Christopher Reeves films and will be called SUPERMAN RETURNS.

It also says that they will create a new script as well and the suit that Stan Winston created will be thrown away !!! But this will mean no X3 for a while or if it is to still go ahead, no Brian Singer.

Great news if you ask me, a pity about X3 but i'm really looking forward to a classy new Superman film !!!!

Well, there was talk of Jake Gyllenhaal taking over the Spiderman role, had Maguire pulled out. I think Jake would make a perfect Clark Kent.

But I guess it depenRAB on the angle of the script - whether he's a young man, or an ageing superhero, a la Batman (at least the Batman of the Burton era).

This is fantastic news! As a life long Superman fan who was brought up on the Christopher Reeve films and the comic books, I was dreading a new Superman film that would piss all over my childhood memories.

Now they've got a good director, they just need to nail the cast. One thing I do feel very strongly is the role of Superman: he MUST be an unknown actor. Otherwise it just wont work, you'll be sitting there looking at Supes and saying "that's (INSERT NAME HERE) in tights!". Get an unknown actor for the role of the Man of Steel and then build a stellar cast around him.

Also good news that it wont be an origin story, but carry on from the other four. We dont need to see him travel to Earth again but more importanly, they cant mess with his past! Some of the horror stories of Supes getting his powers from his suit or Lex being an alien were horrendous.

One puzzle is the name "Superman Returns". Does that imply that he's gone away for a while and then come back again????

Just really hope they keep Williams' theme tune as well! Any more news please post it here!

I heard rumours that Brendan Fraser was being considered. Probably unfounded.. but still even a rumour is enough to strike terror into my heart. He's too tubby, couldn't be pretty in tights! It's pretty much for definite that Tom Welling isn't interested, I love him, but no doubt he'd be afraid of being type-cast completely if he was involved. Anyway, it'd take a very talented, suitable actor to do the film justice. So again, PLEASE NOT FRASER!

I dont watch smallville so have no idea who anyone in it is, i dont like the show. I was hoping if he played the role it would confuse people and they would cancel the show since the guy grew up so fast, then went back to young clark within a few weeks.

Nah, Tom Welling doesn't have the charisma, in my opinion.

And why does it have to be played by an unknown? Maguire wasn't unknown when he slipped into Spidey's tights (so to speak).

If it's a continuation, then I'm guessing they'll go for a guy in his late 20s/30s.

Aah, but I'd still pick Gyllenhaal. A great actor, and of course, he's already played a superhero...or rather, a guy with a superhero name...Donnie Darko!!

Remember though when Maguire is Spiderman, he's behind a mask for a lot of it and even Maguire has said that if it werent for the mask, he'd feel silly!

Superman is basically a guy in tights with his face uncovered - you'd still think thats Gyllenhaal in spandex! Thats why Id still suggest an unknown actor to be honest.

As for Welling, I gave up on Smallville as it was just getting too silly. They've messed about with the legend too much it just got plain annoying.

Still nothing official on this btw.

I'm sorry if I offended your fella, Garbage. He's sweet to look at, but about as charismatic as a wet tissue. Oop, I've done i again!

TFe - I get your point about using an unknown. It's a question of whether the studio would allow Singer to go down this route. ANyway, I wouldn't worry - Singer knows what he's doing, particularly when it comes to casting the right people for roles.

Ok.. so in Smallville he's pretty lacking in attitude. But I still remember him in Judging Amy and he was so much more interesting a personality. Karate guy Rob who got dumped because he doesn't like reading.. :p

There's a lot of talk of Jude Law playing Superman. It's also rumoured Natalie Portman is favourite to play Lois Lane. Can't see Jude Law working personally..

I'd heard things such as Natalie Portman as Lois Lane (Kiera Knightly as well) and Johnny Depp as Lex Luthor!

Thye sound a lot more realistic than when McG was in charge. Beyonce as Lois and Justin Timberlake as a gay Jimmy Olsen! Where did that come from?!?!

It seems kind of stupid to just ignore Smallville when it is the obvious build up to a super-man film, would be like making a Catwoman film with a different catwoman then the comics who doesn't live in Gotham city and has no connection with Batman...oh wait they did!

I'm assuming that all the news about Brenden Frazier, Jake Gyllenhall (sp?) will have to be tossed out now as it seems as Singer will probably tottally re-write the script and totally re-cast.

If Singer won't be doing X3, there's a buzz about Joss Whedon on the AICN message boarRAB.... i'd love to see a Joss Whedon X-Men movie.

How about a Death and Life of Superman film .... I loved that storyline !!!

Problem with Smallville tho is that it doesnt "fit in" with the Christopher Reeve series of films. You have to treat them seperately as Smallville has decided to add in more into the story which doesnt make sense in the movies.

In Smallville they'd have to kill of Clarks dad and let him move to Metropolis. There is also the small matter of Clark and Lex knowing each other, the introduction into Smallville of Lois Lane, yet they shouldnt know each other eithier! And dont get me started on those bloody caves!

The film wouldn't be a continuation/remake of the Christopher Reeve films the same as Batman begins doesn't have a connection with the previous films.

Hmmm after reading that it would be a continuation, I see what you mean, not sure that's a great idea, mind you people seemed upset the Hulk film didn't carry on from the TV show so see why they would do it!
