Superman Returns #2: He hears our cry for help

Well I finished reading the novel! Don't know which one I liked better, the movie or the book as both were both exemplarary.

Loved the movie because Jason used his super-strength and tossed the piano at Brutis. The book was good b/c instead it showed Jason using his, what I'm guessing was x-ray vision since he was able to see things that other's couldn't such as these moments:

Book:

"Mommy, Daddy, there" Lois looked but couldn't see anything.

"It's mommy, it's mommy. I see her." Richard held is breath as Lois surfaced

There were also some cute moments in the book that I liked such as these.

Jason to Superman- "Hey, you know, you look just like-" Superman cuts him off

Superman to Richard and then Richard to Superman-"You promised you wouldn't come back. You lied."
"I'm not you, I can do that."

Loved the Superman and Lois moments in the book as well!

Lois when Superman is unconscious in the plane- "You can't die. You can't leave me... leave us again. Please... please... you can't die."

Lois to Superman when she takes out the kryptonite dagger "We did it, honey. We did it." "Richard looked back and saw she was speaking to him [Superman]."

So many more great Superman & Lois moments in the book than the movie. The only thing that I was saddened in the book was that they didn't insert the conversation that Superman has with his son at the end; the speach is father gave him. But other than that, the book totally rocked and I was glad to see some of my favorite moments inserted with the dialogue.

darn, crappiness..

one of the reason that i really loved this movie, is because they paid a lot of homages to Superman 1 and 2...it's sooo

What I worry about is that in the SR sequel that the studio will demand Bryan Singer make SM more "likeable" which translates into "dark and angsty" when it doesn't need to be.

Let me give examples of why I believe a lot of younger audiences are confused with whether or a character is complex with whether or not they are "dark".

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back is considered one of the best SW films among SW fans because they say it is much "darker" than the other ones.

Yes. It is much darker in the sense Luke Skywalker gets his hand cut off by Darth Vadar, Han Solo is captured, tortured and then frozen and the Rebel Alliance is basically smashed and scattered by the end of the film and there is no definitive happy ending per se.

However, all of these dark things mean absolutely NOTHING if you take them by themselves. These are just actions and plot points.

The real reason fans like TESB is because we learn something interesting and complex about the main characters like Darth Vader is Luke's father; Han and Leia have romantic feelings for each other; We meet Yoda for the first time who is a great character in himself.

THESE (above) are why the film is probably the best SW film of them all. It is not just because of all the "dark" things that go on around the characters, but how the characters themselves are developed that elevate the film.

This is the big misconception/confusion a lot of younger viewers have with stories that involve dark plot points, but not necessarily interesting characters.

The new Battlestar Galactica is the same way. It is a very dark and forboding version of the story, but most of the characters aren't that interesting in my opinion (or are cliche stereotypes) and if you took away all the dark things that go on the series would not stand alone based on the characters themselves IMO.

This is why I am glad SR and hopefully the sequel will retain who SM is, but expand on his character and the relationship to the other characters... Even the villains... Because this is what makes good storytelling. Not making SM some dark, angst filled character who is more like a sycophant than a true super hero.

Deleted scenes would be a great addition. I can't wait for Superman to come out. Although I'm going to have to wait till Christmas to get it as I've had my eyes set on season 2 of Joan.

Superman Returns, while flawed, does not disgrace the mythology. Far from it. It is a bombastic, rousing, explosive burst of summer fun and fantasy, enriched by its predecessors and rejuvenated by the new blood and slavish religious devotion of director Bryan Singer.

Yeah, I got the same impression also. But here's a thought: Maybe if Lois really hadn't known that Superman was the father of Jason, maybe when she had gotten pregnant, she had some kind of feeling. You know because before Superman she didn't have a boyfriend or anything like that. So maybe it was one of those things where she felt that the only person she had been in love with was Superman so that could've maybe given her the impression that she had slept with him, but not remembered that it happened until she concieved Jason.

(hope I didn't jumble that all up.)

Cool new thread. Love the icons on the first page by the way.

And I agree, Martha wasn't given enough screen time. Hopefully in the next one.

2009? That's not that long. It's only 3 years away. Hopefully in the next one there will be even more Clark/Supes-Lois scenes.

I doubt they'll change him, at least I hope not.

Well I've been watching Superman II on HBO. It's so fun to watch that one now (I mean it always was before SR but still.) There are so many things in SII that now have something of value such as these 3 moments:

Superman & Lois sleeping together: We now know that's the moment she conceives Jason!!!

Superman/Clark telling Lois that someday she'll meet another guy even though she doesn't want to meet some other guy: But then later on she meets Richard and she's happy

Superman telling the president he won't fail again: Yet Superman leaves and America has to now take care of their own problems for 5 years.

I love seeing this all connect!

Thought I'd post some Superman Pics!

I like Superman being Superman. I don't want them to become Superman in a depressed and dark guy. I hate when the studios change the characters and storylines so much to make them "likeable".
