OMG i am 43 and went to see this at the cinema aged 14 and it was so cutting edge back then and boy do i feel old watching this now on FIVE .
the effects look hideous. and watching on hi def tvs wont do it justice so isnt time we had a restored version ??
love the first 2 Superman films.

And yet somehow I still love this movie. Both cuts are essential imho. I love Donner's version on the big boxset I have, but I'll still always love the Lester one too.

I think both the Donner and Lester versions have their good points.

Superman 4 was dreadful though, but then that was because Cannon ran off with the money, and Superman 3 is an underrated classic.

It's so not. Too much of Richard Pryor's clowing about, and not enough of Christopher Reeve.

Still, I like the junk yard scrap.

Watched Superman 2 on sunday with my two sons (8 and 6) and they were completely absorbed and loved every minute of it.

They have seen it before on DVD, but this was some time ago and the younger one doesn't seem to remember this.

Can't wait for them to be old enough to sit and watch Superman Returns with me :)

Personally, I found it almost unwatchable. As a curio for film buRAB, it's fine, but as a standalone film, it doesn't work well at all.

I love both Superman 2s but the Richard Donner is sans comedy scenes (which Lester added) and makes it more of a worthy sequel to the 1st one

Really can't agree with you there - what a load of rubbish that movie was. I can't believe Bryan Singer turned down the chance to finish his X-Men trilogy to make that turd.

I can see how people find Superman 2 dated. With Donner footage intercut with Lester footage it does seem all over the place at times. The Donner elements are the best as there is a lot of clunky comedy in the Lester sequences, particularly the part in Niagra Falls. It is strange to watch as Margot Kidder looks completely different in the Donner footage compared to the Lester scenes

Having said that, I do think that the scene of Clark Kent being revealed as Superman (falling into the log fire) is better than the Donner version of having him being shot with a blank. That always seemed pretty hokey to me.

I never thought much of Superman Returns. For a summer blockbuster it was too committed to being referential towarRAB the first two films and forgot to be fun.

With the exception of Brandon Routh who I thought did a good job, the casting was all wrong with Superman Returns.

Whoever gave the okay for Kate Bosworth to play Lois Lane should hopefully now be serving fries in a Wendy's. Horrible casting decision.

And I didn't like Spacey as Lex Luger either. Played it too over the top.

Agree - the casting of Superman Returns was ALL wrong.

Kevin Spacey, who played Lex Luthor (badly), campaigned for Kate Bosworth to get the Lois gig, having just come off his movie 'Beyond the Sea' with her.

Blame him.

I thought Spacey was fine as Lex, the main problem was that he didn't really fit in a movie where we had such a booooring Superman and Lois.

What Bryan Singer tried to do was make a serious 3rd instalment of the franchise (ignoring Supes III and IV) assuming everyone had watched the Christopher Reeve films and would buy this as a direct sequel. What we ended up with was a really expensive film that didn't even need to be made!

Everyone will forget about Superman Returns in the grand scheme of things, especially when the new Superman film (being worked on by David Goyer and Jonathan Nolan) comes along with the big fresh ideas for the story it supposedly will have.

No actor will ever do the Superman/Clark Kent difference as well as Reeve does in the 'hand in the fire' scene. When he realises the jig is up, and he becomes Superman, it's like he changes shape!
