You seem to have missed the point on the 70s thing - it's ironic as the lead characters are far from cool and confident with the laydeez. That is the joke of the title and McLovin.
There are several lead characters and none are perfect but teens are awkward and gawky by nature and each of them progresses by the end of the film.
I thought it was funny and just a bit better than Knocked Up.
Funny how all US coming of age movies since the dawn of films have maintained that all high schools are filled with gorgeous girls though. I very much doubt that!
thought the movie was brilliant..easily the best comedy of 2007, and far better than the almost unfunny 'Knocked Up'. In fact, possibly my favourite film comedy ever.
The only poor part for me was the fact that the cops tagged along after we first see them. That, for me, was slightly self-indulgent, and completely unnecessary. I thought the interaction between the three frienRAB and the contrasts between their personalities was spot-on.
(George) Michael Cera stole the show for me. A very talented young comic actor.
Interestingly, I thought Superbad just edged Knocked Up. But that might be largely due to the huge amount of hype that surrounded the latter. Either way, they're both spreading their butt cheeks apart and crapping all over the competition.
And it looks like we're in for another treat later this year with Pineapple Express from the same crew.
I loved it. I thought it was really funny.
It harks back to the golden days of teen movies such as American Graffiti, and it's a classic of the genre IMO.
