Super Sport Bikes. A ridiculous choice for most people?

You betcha! And this is why:

1) Most people will never go to a race track. Most of those that do will do it rarely. Ever notice how many sellers claim their bike never got raced?

2) Pretty much the only way to take advantage of what super sport bikes offer in town and on the freeway or highway is by riding recklessly.

3) Relatively poor low-end torque. I just read in a forum of a GSXR1000 owner asking about increasing the low-end torque. He ONLY rides his bike in town

4) You may be fairly skilled but a super sport bike will tempt you to go beyond your skill level. But many people aren't even very skilled.

5) Relatively poor gas mileage

6) An enlargement vacuum pump is a much cheaper way to deal with your ego problem. ;)

For those who wanna go to the track, a super sport bike may be the way to go. For all others it's a silly choice at best. Instead of buying a super sport bike to deal with your insecurities you should seek counseling!

You know until you own one, keep your opinions to yourself. You have no idea what you're saying. It's a life style. Yes most will never make it to a track. Just like the Corvette owners will never make it to the track. Most bikes get better gas mileage than cars, I own an 1100cc motorcycle and it gets between 45-50 miles to the gallon. My 2003 Toyota Corolla gets about 35 on a good day. So get your figures straight. Just because you don't like them doesn't mean others don't. One guy asked for more low end torque, these things have more low torque than most other bikes, he just wants more. What do you ride a Moped? Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but get your facts correct before you start slamming a life style you have no idea about! Oh, did fail to mention, I don't even own a crotch rocket. I have a cruiser style bike, I don't care for the crotch rocket bikes. But I'm sure going to slam something that I don't care for just because they like to be different. This is a free country, we get to drive or ride what ever we want. Hallelujah!!!!!

Yes and No...

Sure, for most of us mortals a 1000cc Liter Bike is waay too much motorcycle for the road. For squid-types who buy these bikes for bragging rights + wheelies, they can prove to be very dangerous; even fatal. For an experienced motorcyclist with a careful throttle hand and a respect for the power these bikes make, riding a 1000cc sport bike can be a fun, rewarding experience. It all depends on what category you fall into...

As far as low-end torque is concerned, I'm not a fan of Inline-4's for this very reason. I own a Ducati 916 which is an L-Twin, and provides very linear torque that pulls hard from way down low in the rev range. By today's standards the 916 doesn't make nearly as much power as, say, the 1098. It's still a very fast bike though, and it handles like a dream in the corners (where the men are separated from the boys).

Any idiot can get on a Hayabusa + open the throttle in a straight line; that takes no skill. Dragging knee through a 60mph sweeper is a different game altogether, and one that most T-Shirt-wearing Liter-Bike squids know nothing about. Obviously dragging knee on the street is a bad idea no matter who you are, but the point is that there's nothing wrong with owning a fast bike, as long as it's in skilled, respectful hands... Remember, anyone can kill themselves just as easily on a Ninja 250 as on a ZX-10 if they don't know how to ride!!
