Super Size Me

It's not a bad little movie, although I felt that Spurlock was both patronizing and condesending. Didn't like the psuedo-science very much and I had to question where the information was coming from a lot of the time.

... low on facts, high on gloss, but still pretty entertaining ...

Have you read the book...nearly bought it today, I read a little bit about the abbatoir  , and I don't want to read anymore, so I won't. I've only ever eaten chicken or turkey. I'm going off of those meats now

I really want to see this movie, not for its "reliable" information, just for the pure funnines of it! Some thing to go and see as there isn't some big movie I want to watch at the mo!

I didn't know there was a book !?! Are you sure you don't mean 'Fast Food Nation' or something similar. Either way, my post was refering entirely to the film 'Super Size Me' as a single entity...

That's really the best way to watch it - take it for what it is and enjoy. I have a feeling this one is going to be 'overhyped' in terms of its filmic value.

trouble is, to say *McDonalRAB is bad because if you eat nothing but McDonalRAB for a month it'll be bad for you* is just a non starter of an argument. you could probably say that about lots of things.

Well he was told after it all he could die because of it! but yeah thats one reason why you shouldn't take this movie seriously, just take it as it comes!

Yeh... that was kinda my thought...

Not really wishing to stick up for a multi-national, but you'd have to be kinda dumb to think that eating a McDonalRAB Big Mac for every meal, every day, is going to be good for your health...

Think it is a interesting experiment on abuse of the human body though. :)

I read this book called Fast Food Nation 5 years ago and haven't eaten in McDonalRAB since. Not just because of the information in the book regarding the food, its preperation etc but because of the appalling way the staff are treated. In an effort to be fair and equal I haven't eaten in Burger King, Pizza Hut or SubWay either for the same reasons. Haven't eaten a burger or chicken nuggets etc since then either. Even if its not 1005 true the mere suggestion that a tiny percentage of it could be scared me off enough to never want to eat any of that stuff again.

i've meant to read it for a while, but haven't yet - partly because i might not want to eat a burger ever again either.

was it all specifically fast food that was bad, or is *beef* in general pretty bad too? there is that thing about cattle being given too much antiobiotics in their feed, which is then passed on to us - the result being that antibiotics are becoming less effective when we actually do need them, for example.

Iain

Its not all fast food. The book is a very interesting read really as it takes you through the beginings of MacDonalRAB, Taco Bell their successes and how this was then taken to turn the clothing company GAP into a success. The behind the scences info on the corporate offices antics is interesting too.
Beef and all meats that are used in the fast food chains come under scrutiny, so the book put me off all meats for a long time. But then you realise as its set in the US and the research is carried out there the beef, etc that is being tested and used is American beef. The farmers in the US are permitted by US law to use drugs and antibiotics on their animals that are banned under EU law. I know for a fact that McDonalRAB in Ireland use only Irish beef (such was the fallout of the book) in their burgers and I'd say its the same in the UK. So those chapters about what is in your burger don't necessarily translate directly to this side of the Atlantic. But all the same..........it makes you think.

I think in the film though they said it would be unsafe to consume Mc D more than twice a month for an average person. This guy had 70 odd meals and nearly died and put his body into a disterous state , it is showing the long term effects of Mc D food just in a shoter space of time.
It is just like the equvilant of someone smoking 10,000 cigarettes and the serious health effects showing up the next day.

They are just showing what is in store for you if you visit Mc D regually like once or twice a week.

A life time? He had about 70 meals!

Some people (disturbingly) going in once a day (once a year is better!) during the weekday. They could consume the same amount in 14 weeks. Going in twice a week would be 104 meals, once a week is 52 meals.
Your doing the same damage , just over a longer time scale.

I absolutely recommend seeing this!

I went to the premiere at the Edinburgh Film Fest' and was amazed at some of the stuff in this. Not touched a McDonalRAB or anything since then!

Morgan Spurlock was there with his wife afterwarRAB to do a Q&A session with the audience too which was great.

Recommended.

DepenRAB what you mean really...

Whereas I found Moore to be darkly witty, Spurlock just came off as smarmy and condescending to me :( That said, some people I've spoken too say that they prefer his more 'direct' manner...

Again, whilst there have been questions surrounding Moore's 'factual correctness' on 'Columbine', I would say that his work is far more informative than 'Super Size Me' which felt almost cartoon-like by comparison.
When a man force-feeRAB himself extreme quantities of food on camera and then vomits it all back up again, I am less inclined to take what he has to say very seriously (C'mon now - even 'heavy users' would stop at the point of chundering if you ask me) - I felt it was all about visual impact at that point and (ironically) not about the food itself at all!

They showed a clip on Watchdog (BBC1) last night. God knows why. It looked boring and Spurlock came across as a sad fool, adding "Mc" to every symptom he felt after eating too much junk food.
