Summer Wars!

I'm eager, but cautious about this. When I caught The Girl Who Leapt Through Time after all the hype and praise, I came away from it flat and relatively unimpressed. This would have to be leaps and bounRAB better.

I want to hear more, this is supposed to be a really fun movie. I had a reasonably good time with The Girl Who Leaped Through Time, and I'm hopeful for Mamoru Hosada's continued success so that he can direct & deliver (hopefully) even better stuff.

With any luck, the UK licensing means a R1 license soon. In the meantime, I'm garabling on it being screened during the marathon that DC's Cherry Blossom Festival does every year.

I started this movie at around 6:00 pm.

When the movie finished, I looked at my clock and it was around 10:00 pm. Which meant that I kept on rewinding scenes and fangasming waaaay longer than I should have have.

Okay, first of all, this is so freaking "Our War Game" it's not even funny. Everything you have seen in this movie is "Our War Game" just in a different situation and obviously not Digimon. Other than that, it's "Our War Game": The Reanimation.

I should mention now that was an amazing Digimon movie. Thus, this was also an amazing movie.

The only flaws I really had with it were that the animation outside of the internet was a little off and the fact that I just about predicted half the stuff that was going to go down because I had seen, you guessed it, "Our War Game" already. The everything that was borrowed from it made it for somewhat of a predictable experience, though with Mamoru Hosada at the helm, it was to be expected. Besides those two quips, everything about this movie was amazing. The characters, the humor, the fight scenes, the romance, the internet, all of it was just amazing. It almost became fun when I thought stuff like "I wonder if it's going to like evolve now..Oh wow it did!" and "Gee, I wonder if it's going to launch a nuclear missle just like....yeah, yeah it did." There's really no way to describe everything that made this movie work for me but it just did. Last, I'm always a sucker for cute romance stories like this one.

Oh and the last battle scene was like, THE ULTIMATE KOI KOI GAME SHALL PIERCE THE HEAVENS! (When the angel wings started coming out, that's when it started getting a little over-the-top.

So yeah, the main reason why this was why this was deju vu was:

1) As mentioned, the same people that worked on Our War Games did this movie. Recycled plot, ah hoy.

2) Sadamoto was the character designer. So in a freaky way, I was watching Gainax and Digimon for almost 2 hours.

Even if the baseline plot is technically a recycle, it's a fantastic movie. It's all the fun and family-positivity of a Ghibli film with all cyberpunk of Ghost in the Shell wrapped in fantastic animation into one amazing package. Probably the best anime film I've seen since my personal fave 5cm Per Second.

If more anime were like Summer Wars, anime wouldn't be in a slump.

grandma...no!!!!!
that aside this movie was excellent and when I first saw it (with paprika on the same day what a mind screw that was!) all I could think to myself was wow...this was a good movie...I need to rewatch it though

Hate to dig up an old thread, but anybody know if there are any plans for this to be released in the US? I heard rumors about FUNi getting the license for it, but that's it.
