Suit Up, For the First Time - Mobile Suit Gundam TALKBACK (Spoilers)

Watched the first few episodes and I'm liking it so far. I don't think I was fully appreciating MSG because my mind was wondering. Or I'm not that far in and I'm right about not much happening in the first 3 episodes.

I feel the same. I bought those movies during the whole Wing boom on Toonami, so I know I have a bit of a bias. I am exploiting this now since I never watched the series as a whole or listened to the dub aside from my experience with the various Gundam games on the PS2.

Am I the only one who thought about Neil Patrick Harris when reading the thread title?

I love how in both Zeta, MSG, and SEED they just skip everything that happens between getting the Gundam and entering Earth in the compilation movies. (Luna 2, Artemis, getting new ships)

Bah, that's alright with me with the lack of a dub (because seriously, the dub that was made for it is terrible), and given Bandai's precarious situation, a dub may be a bit too much of an investment to them.

That said, I've started watching this show, and hope to fill in the gaps I've been meaning to fill for a long while. It didn't help that I cared very little about the awkward dub (shoddy direction and ADR ftl), which compelled me to drop most of it. However, now I've developed a tolerance for it, and can enjoy the series even more than I did before.

Also did anybody notice the date on the upper right hand corner that says when it's uploaded? It doesn't put the actual upload date, but the original Japanese premiere date. I dunno if they do this for other shows and movies on Youtube, but it was kinda cute.

I've also been surprised at just how SEED "borrowed" different plot points from MSG (I knew SEED had done it but not exactly what had been borrowed and in what ways) and just how fast MSG is going through those points verse SEED. I can also finally see what might have been the impetus of breaking up Athrun and Cagali, after reading up MSG's plotline with Sayla and Amuro (and IMO have to say that GSD should have just skipped "borrowing" on that one). I can also see where Wing got some of its plot, as well.

Anyway, I'm watching MSG on ANN for anyone whose interested. Also, while I'm a English dub fan, this has to be one of the weakest outings from Ocean Vancouver I've run into in a while. Does anyone know exactly when this dub was recorded?

Gotta love this. Well, it is called a Ball after all...

Finally finished this series for the first time. Things got pretty weird towarRAB the end with the Newtype imagery. Also, you don't see someone take being compared to Hitler in stride very often. It was a pretty satisfying series overall, but now it's time for some Zeta!

"We're jumping onto White Base! AAAAAHHHHHH!"

Well it's been awhile since I've posted in on this but the show only has a week left on ANN and I'm trying to crash finish it up (as in I have lousy time management and managed to not get past Ep 8 until now).

Anyway, I just finished the Raraba Rau section of the show (I'm up to Ep 22) and I have to say that while Andy and Aishia from SEED are obviously based on Raraba and Harmon the two characters they most remind me of are Ray and Charles from Eureka Seven. Well that and Harmon has a strange reserablance to what Tammy Wynette, and quite a few other CW female singers, looked like in the 1970s (so is Raraba Rau suppose to be George Jones are something? Goodness lets hope not! ). I also liked Andy and Aishia a lot better from the get go than I did these two.

Other comments at this point: The late disco era music and dress really add to helping me enjoy this show and remeraber when it was originally aired. I was 14 when this originally aired in Japan, so I actually remeraber this stuff first hand and from a age range that the show was trying to appeal to at the time. One thing I wanted to mention is that I'm pretty sure some of the visuals for this show referencing what was going on then are intentional. I don't mean the CW singer thing - that was my attempt at a joke . Instead I mean Degwin Sodo Zabi looking like a cross between Idi Amin and Papa Doc/Baby Doc Duvalier, and a James Bond baddie (and not jokingly Harmon's hair probably really is a nod to specific hairstyles, popular in North America, from the same time period).

Back to the music, there are times that both it and the costumes remind me of Blake's Seven's first season which makes perfect sense since both aired the same year. The makers of each probably didn't see the other at the time of the filming of either but were likely just influenced by things that were happening at the time. In another nod to B7, Char seems to really have a "Kerr Avon" personality at times though they are very much not the same characters. However, I can see why Char was so popular. Good looking, amoral, and totally not like the other characters in this show. You can't tell where he's going but you know when he pops up it's going to be interesting. Last thought - Amaruo is a brat. Not news to anyone whose seen the show, I'm sure, but I do find it interesting that MSG manages to make him one but not totally making him unlikeable. They found a way to do a character like this and make it work well and they should get some credit for it .
