Mobile Suit Gundam was the very first Gundam series and its influence can be seen in nearly every mecha show made since. All the tropes of Gundam began here and if you've never seen it you're absolutely missing out on one of the best animated series ever made.

So let's discuss the series that started it all: Mobile Suit Gundam

Description from Crunchyroll:

U.C. 0079. The rebel space colonies of the Principality of Zeon launch a war of independence against the Earth Federation, using humanoid fighting vehicles called mobile suits to overwhelm the Federation Forces and conquer half of Earth's surface.

Months later, the Federation has finally developed its own prototype mobile suits at a remote space colony. But when the colony suffers a Zeon surprise attack, these new weapons fall into the hanRAB of a motley crew of civilians and cadets, and fate places a youth named Amuro Ray at the controls of the white mobile suit Gundam...

I've been watching this masterpiece on crunchyroll and I will sum it up simply as this for now. Where have I been all of this show's life? It's fantastic!

Ah, the original Gundam. I really enjoyed the film trilogy so I took a gander at some of the plots dropped from the films. I have to say, the M'quve character was quite nice and it's a shame he wasn't fleshed out more. It's also a pitty the Gelgoog got so little screen time.

I perfer the original 1979 TV series over 1981-83 movie trilogy because I think it has better pacing and I liked all the weird Zeon mecha that got cut out of the movies. The series is a real classic though and it quite easy to see why it sparked a franchise.

I'm making my way through MSG now.

The OP/ED is really annoying. The show gets ridiculous at some points. But its kind of fun.

Also, MSG is on YouTube now.

I've been making my way through it for the first time as well, and man I'm loving it. It's no wonder that it was so revolutionary back then.

Oh the tragedies of war....
like Miharu...

If that was the case, then they wouldn't have spent the time and effort to give it's sequel and 00 dubs as well. o.o

Although once the series is done, they'd do good to put the three movies in their remastered Japanese for streaming as well, since we did have THAT for somewhat unblemished First Gundam glory on DVD.

No, no herr Juu, I blamed it for distracting me from catching my typo.

By the way, hopefully someone will have made a post in the SEED thread sometime soon so I can post my thoughts on #6+ (spoiler: wow, they were actually good!!)

Wait wait... Mirai had feelings for Slegger? Since when? That felt really sudden. But man Bright... she totally wants to jump your bones and you say "we talk as frienRAB"... smooth.

It's because Slegger was basically the only one defending Mirai from the fiance situation and giving the most attention. He swoons her with a family heirloom and chivalry.

And Mirai is gonna jump Bright's bones....twice.

Yes but after he defenRAB her he smacks her for not giving the guy a chance. Apparently that's a turn on. She seems to be interested in him before he hanRAB her his mother's ring unless I missed something.

No, the slapping thing is just a japanese military tradition. Or something. They do that a lot more in Zeta Gundam (among just beating the crap outta each other)

Fun Fact:

Professional bishounen/mega-super-rockstar/feminine-looking man Gackt is a gigantic fan of MSG. He is stated to have memorized the entire dialogue of the first series and can do a mean impersonation of Char.

So just know that whenever you watch an episode of MSG, you're in the same fanbase as this guy

I never realized how many elements SEED lifted from MSG until watching it on youtube. Andy and Aisha are soo Raraba Ral and Harmon, as an example. Makes me with they Brotherhood'd MSG.
