sugar vs artificial sweeteners for coffee and baking?

I am so confused with all the backlash for both, I refuse to drink unsweetened coffee and never have dessert again.

I personally have Splenda with my coffee and I've noticed it is used in all the "sugar free" store products etc. But ofcourse there are advocates against Splenda.

I would like to know the real deal. Which is Healthier? Sugar or Artificial Sweeteners?
Also, please don't suggest honey, I only like it in Tea. thanks
