Sudden painful lump, is this an abscess?

Hi, a very painful lump has developed under the skin on an old surgical incision, it's a bikini line scar where I had a hysterectomy fourteen years ago, they went in over the same scar where I had previously had an ovarian cyst removed.
The pain started quite suddenly last night, it's getting more painful and sore as time goes on, tonight the skin has started to turn very red and quite hot to the touch. The lump's about an inch and a half in length, and slightly narrower in width.
Do you think this could be an abscess, and if so, do I just leave it alone? The only other thing I can think it could be is a swollen lymph node, I know that we have Inguinal lymph nodes in this area, so could this be the problem?
I hate having to see the Doctor, so any advise would be great, many thanks.

Hello,

As much as you hate to see a doctor, this is exactly what you are going to have to do. This lump could be any number of things including an abcess. It has to be seen and checked out in order to be treated, especially if it is becoming more tender and warm to the touch. Make an appointment and in the meantime, try using a warm compress and see if it responds to this. Don't wait until you have a serious infection that spreads before going to see a physician, do it as soon as possible.

Hope this helps.

Hi Estria, many thanks for the advise, I saw my GP this morning, it is an abscess, he's given me a course of strong antibiotics, and told me to phone the surgery when it comes to a head, so one of the Nurses can "sort it out for me"..lanse it I guess? Lovely!!
Thanks again.

Hi,

I am glad that you went to see your physician. Using the warm compress will help it to "come to a head" much faster so you will be rid of it sooner. It will also soften the tissue around it and make it less painful.

Take care.
