Sucks to be poor...

Okay, I'm at uni at the moment, and I know students are supposed to be poor - it kind of comes with the territory. But it's fucking ridiculous for me. Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to starve to death at the moment. But it comes close sometimes. My weekly food budget is
 
Well, all I can say is, keep your heart set on the future. You're financially strapped right now, so you can prosper down the road.

Being broke is no fun, and quite often, downright humiliating. I know all too well. I ate mac and cheese for a couple of years so I could at least support myself later.
I'm more content for doing so.

You've obviously got your wits about you, so I wouldn't jones too bad.

Even though you have, what seems to be, a plump schedule, can't to pick up a mindless 15-20 hour a week gig, just for disposable income? Jockey a register of fold clothes. Nothing all that taxing. Academics come first.

Stay in school, dont try to climb the corporate ladder, it sucks.

Wash your laundry in the bathtub. Its a pain but it is cheap and good upper arm excercise. Also gives you time to think about stuff.

Start going to food banks. Im sure they have them in England.

Do they have food stamps over there? Apply for them if they do.

I don't really mind being broke, but I have no clue what it is to not be broke. I used to be a lot poorer than I am now, my kids first few years we didnt even have electricity most of the time. You'll live.
 
I've been in the same boat before. When I lived by myself in phoenix I lived off of top ramen for about 6 months. It's amazing how many ways you can make it. There's a cook book out there just for it: 101 Ramen Recipes

I also only had a waffle iron and coffee pot. I made my ramen in the coffee pot, grilled cheese sandwiches on the waffle iron heheh.

I'm broke most of the times to, as a student I am. But I see it like that everything solves in a way or another. Don't forget to live, money isn't everything even if it can seems like that sometimes. Best hopes for you.
 
5 years in uni.. ouuuuch. Good for you, I could never do that. There must be a way you can fit in just a couple of hours for a job. Also, to make your food less bland, buy lots of spices, and lots of veg. you can do all sorts. Gimme your address and I'll send you the student cook book.
 
My hat's off to you, HannibalJC for having your priorities straight. Full time students don't have it easy, especially those, like you, who are funding it by themselves.

Doesn't sound like you have a lot of free time for a part time job, but one thing you might consider is typing up term papers, resumes and such for your fellow students. You have very good written communication skills (noticed that in your posts), and would be able to do a bit of editing for those who are less than adequate. In our area, typists can get up to $10+ a page, and that more than pays for paper, printer ink, etc. Add a bit more if you're also being asked to correct the person's spelling, grammar, etc.

You could post your ad on a student bulletin board (or whatever you have locally) for free. And, for the most part, you'd be working/typing at your own pace, or when time allows, as long as you meet the deadline. Another good thing about this type of service is that word gets around - and soon you'll be having folks come to you without having seen your ad.

It's a drag not being able to take your girl to school dances - they are important to some folks. Try getting dressed up sometime and go to a free concert in the park - dancing in the moonlight is quite romantic and something she'll never forget.

Hang in there, and we've always got an extra bowl of soup if you're in the neighborhood.
 
Is there no help available from the student finance department in your uni? I'm going to uni next year (hopefully!) and i'm funding myself aswell. fortunatley tho, i'll only be doing 12 hours of lectures per week.

Caffeinated - you may be on to something there - a lot of my friends are losing silly marks because they haven't proofread their assignments, whether they'll pay for it remains to be seen...

eh what? - The financial contingency fund took my application, but turned me down on the basis that I was a first year, and I am technically a dependent student (the criteria for being an independent student are: total estrangement from or death of parents, having lived independently for 2 years or more, or having kids of your own.) I'll try again next year though.

Top Ramen is a brand of instant noodles that costs very little - anywhere from 10-25 cents per package. It's filling and almost nutritious. It also comes in about 25 "flavors", so you can get a bit of variety in your diet.

Hmm...sounds a lot like bachelor's supa noodles! And you're right they are awesome. But I'm still trying to stay healthy, so I need to balance it out. I just found a place where they stock tins of sardines in tomato sauce for 19p each (Hooray for Lidl!) I've just passed the 220lb mark, which puts me overweight for my height. My body fat %age already puts me down as overweight. I'm trying to exercise more, and spend more on fruit than I normally would. I only need to last this week on
 
Hannibal you are doing very well, Keep your hopes high, don't ever get behind in your grades and it will all pay back, with much more than you could ever expect. Good luck to you!
 
It does suck having no money. I have that instant smash shit at uni with crappy instant gravey. Best of luck dude wioth the finances, it truely can be a bitch. Stick at it though, it's better in the long run plus you become more financially aware.
