Apart from suggesting that you use a credit card instead of debit whenever possible, the author points out that the one rule of thumb for using a debit card is to always, always, always ask for a receipt. This is all the more important where larger transactions that detail multiple items are concerned. Receipt in hand, the first step is to call the merchant. If s/he offers to call your bank for you, step in and do the calling yourself, then conference in the store manager/owner if needed. It is important that you cut out the middleman and remain directly involved throughout the process.
