Subs or Dubs?!?

^ Ok, we get it, but you're actually whining more than the sub defenders here. I've seen very little elitism, just recycled arguments from both sides.

As for films and anime being different - That's just absurd. Anime is a foriegn media, so is a film. They both are based around moving images and sound. The fact that one is a series and the other not makes no difference either as there are also anime films.
Or what, is anime special because it's from Japan?
 
I've watched most of Naruto, half of Death Note, and a few other episodes of other series subbed. I'm not going to argue with you that subs are better, i just prefer dubs.
 
Subs all the way, I cant stand dubs. They are terrible. For example the naruto dub he says believe it every 5 seconds while in the sub version he never once says it. I know the reason behind it but come on. Its going overboard.
 
idk call me lazy but the LAST thing im tryna do is read while watching tv
but ive enjoyed some subs,but sometimes the voices annoy me.like narutos voice
 
Can you confirm this? I never heard about this, and it they do then thats absolutely a bad thing... but that has nothing to do with the dub as such, only with the adaption. The same with edited animation.


I agree, but he is no Wataru Takagi in the end, and the dub does indeed have some flaws overall.

Its just to bad that people don't seem to realize that although there are bad English dubs for sure, they are (especially nowadays) not nearly as bad as they used to and many are even excellent. There are also bad japanese dubs but if one don't know the language its hard to hear in some cases, and subtitles aren't always that good regardless of if its a speed sub some fan made two hours after an episode aired on TV in japan, or something you find on an official DVD release, they can be really horrible regardless.
 
IMO, subs have the true meaning. Alot of fan-subs change what they actually are suppose to say to what they seem fit, which sometimes doesn't fit with the actual anime.
 
^^ That didn't make sense. Anyway, I get more into the story when I actually understand what they're saying, so I'm with dubs. But I'll watch subs if there's no other choice. Also I just don't trust fan-subs.
 
I like to watch dubbed if it's available - to me, it's easier to relate to the voices/ personalities. I don't mind watching subbed, though.
 
i dont mind either but i prefer subbed your getting what there actually saying

dubs are for people who cant read fast enough
 
theres some series where I'll take the Sub or the Dub. Bebop for example, first time i watched it was a fan sub, when i bought the DvD's i watched it with the English Dub, and found it just as good. I've only watched Gungrave as the Dub, and enjoyed it alot.

on the other hand, i couldn't stand the Gantz Dub, i had to turn the sub on. I had the same situation with Love Hina, the Dub made me sick.

i generally prefer Subs because i don't think the Dubs usually do the anime justice. There are situations that i enjoy the Dubs though.
 
Both are translations of the same content though, and both are just as often incorrect and has errors.


English voices can also be natural.
 
I usually watch subs, just because I've only found a few good quality dubs of animes, and usually there's too much of a difference in voice for me.
 
They can be, however there's more expression that is carried in the original language than in a dub usually. Granted there are some great dubs out there. But on a whole: to preserve the integrity of the ind. char.s and their expressionisms it's best to watch subs.

Just as one loses some meaning while translating from one language to another: one also loses some meaning when dubbing from one language to another.
 
Often that is the case, but not always. A good translator that does a good job can translate something and still have the original context carry through. It doesn't really mater either way though, as this isn't an argument that can be used against either English subs or dubs, and thus it serves my argument that there are just as many good dubs as there are subs.

And people seem to not realize that unless you know japanese, you cant really tell if the japanese dub is good or not, and it isn't always.
 
The Japanese audio is the origional format, unless it has a manga or another pre-anime source. But assuming that it doesn't, or perhaps that the manga -> Anime translations are nigh on the same, then you'd consider the anime the origional and correct version. By that it doesn't matter how good the English dub is, the Japanese is still the origional. The truely important thing is; The quality of voice acting and the pacing of the script.
We should probably just try to avoid comparing the translations unless we can fluently speak Japanese really. Yes, I know I should too. And I will.
 
Honestly, I don't know a bit of japanese but I still appreciate the original versions. The sound just sounds perfect for the characters. Like maybe someone in Japan likes dubbed... don't know why... but a possibility.
 
I think you must have only read the bolded bit of my post, because I never said anything like this.
I said we should stop trying to compare the translations of origional, subbed and dubbed if we can't speak, (read and write) fluently in Japanese. I don't know many A4 members who can.
 
I read what you typed. I still think we have a right to compare which is why I said anything. I mean sure it would be nice to be able to speak fluently in japanese but I truly don't think we should be limited to simple things such as a discussion on a forum due to our lack of japanese. Everyone has an opinion they want to openly express. It would be a much better and knowledgeable opinion if they knew japanese, I agree, but still, give them a break.
