Subs or Dubs?!?

I my self have always preferred dubs but the only thing that annoys me is if someone only watches dubs and never even gives subs a chance at all. I always make a point to watch a series in both the subs and dubs(if they are available) but I don't really care if someone likes dubs better if they at least gave subs a chance.
 
Because the subtitles when viewed on a TV may be too small to read in the case of hardsubs (subtitles embedded into the video) and there is no way to change the font size. If set up properly, softsubs (subtitles that are rendered separately from the video) will scale to the proper size or you can manually change the font size. Though with softsubs, they can only be viewed on a computer (which can be connected to a TV) since very few other devices support softsubs or the containers they are in. (.mkv or .mp4 files)

And I hope no one minds but I'm reseting the poll to include three new options.
 
Okay, that's a problem. I looked through the options and there doesn't seem to be anything I can do in truly reseting the poll. Maybe an admin could fix it or we could just start a new thread. Let me see what I can do.
 
Hmm, subs usually have better content like more blood, uncut episodes, no missing episodes, but they also might have translation problems and all of the above. Also, sometimes it gets tiring reading the subs. Dubs are generally better.
 
In most cases this is true. There have been so many translations that have just upset me. A lot of the time it has to do with character names (E.G. Alucard--Arucard). Dubs also have errors because they change the script to match the characters mouth movement, which means parts are either longer or shorter then the original Japanese version.
 
All that stuff about editing has very little to do with if it's a sub or dub, especially today. A good majority of DVD released from reputable companies after 2000 were more or less unaltered and have the option of both dubs or subs. Today, it's practically a standard and rare to find one otherwise.

As for the stuff aired on TV, a lot of it has to do with American censorship laws. And practice of editing for the purpose of localization is pretty much dead.
 
Depends on how I feel about the dubbing and subbing. I can't say I would really want to watch some dubs unless I am used to it, but for some reason, Subs make me feel I have a more connection to the culture.
 
I've always preferred subs. Cuz another thing with dubs that bugs me is hearing voice actors I've heard before in more than one aime. For instance, me and my brother watched the Ah! My Goddess movie last night and he wanted dubbed. Through it I heard Vash from Trigun, Spike from Cowboy Bebop, and Sasami from Tenchi Muyo, or atleast it sounded a whole lot like them. It keeps making me think of a different character whenever I hear it.
 
If you start watching a series in subs then switch half way through its really painful, but not so bad the other way round.
I prefer dubs for when I'm tired and cant be bothered to read, but 9/10 times I'll choose subs.
Also with dubs I tend to find a lot is lost in translation whether it is just emotion or joke, and sometimes the speech can be over simplified in dubs.
But the worst thing ever is when you watch a sub then switch to dub and the characters personality's seem different. I felt this with samurai champloo.
 
I think it primarily comes down to voice acting. Imo most anime sounds better in Japanese since many dubs can be down right horrible (I'll take "Dattebayo" over "Believe It" any day). If done correctly however, dubs can be just as good or better than the original format. It just depends.
