As you said, the sentence structure in Japanese is different to English, but what are subs? Typed english sentences are they not? So they're still an estimation of what is said. For example see post 1057 and 1058 in this thread http://www.anime-forums.com/showthread.php?t=61458&page=43 (King of Rubble as opposed to King of Debris, note the katakana/hiragana (sp?) structure as well)
As for your commemt as to VA's not caring I think that's quite false, these people are professionals, they are on contract most of the time and their performance in one series often helps or hinders them in future roles. With the exception of a couple (Hilary Haag, Spike Spencer and Tiffany Grant are a few I can think off off the top of my head) not a lot are VA's full time. If you want to blame someone it'd be the directors for not using similar talent to the Japanese dub.
