Subs or Dubs?!?

well think about it shouldnt a musculer guy be played by a Guy with a strong voice instead of just reaching puberty. I dunno mabey iam weird
 
Depends, some of the stuff I like has some manic dialogue like Excel Saga, it's too taxing trying to keep up with the subs, same with other titles which have heaps of people talking at the same time.

Stuff like Chrno Crusade which has everyone talking at a reasonable pace, I enjoy the subs. It also depends on the VA's involved, I'm a bit sick of Spike Spencer, but I have a tendency to enjoy Hillary Haag, Alison Keith and Tiffany Grant. They voice they do usually fits what I'd imagine the characters voice to be.
 
Subs get's a vote because they have the real feel in the voiceing and it's another way to learn a language.

Dubs
Well since i've always watched dubs in my life time and payed no mind on how bad the voice acting was..I can now undertand why people prefer subs.
Some have really annoying vocies in dubs it gives me a headache now.
 
Dubs naturally, if they are done well.

If a dubb is well done, i personally cannot possibly see why someone would prefer to watch something in another language and have to constantly stare at the bottom of the screen to get the dialog. I know it becomes a habbit, and people eventualy get 'good' at it, but cmon..you still miss out on alot of the subtle hints that the creator sneaks in there.

Now the real controversy (IMO) lies with the quality of the dubbing itself. Not everything can be translated exactly and have the same effect (such as Narutos infamous "believe it") But still, i much prefer to enjoy the movie without having to read the subs. And when more than one person are talking at the same time and/or the tv or radio is on or something, subs just make me want to shoot my screen
 
I watch because it's the original language, and most dubs annoy me. The only good dubs I've seen are Bebop, Trigun, Last Exile, and Samurai Champloo. I don't miss any subtle things. It's really not hard to read whilst watching.
 
subs all the way for me. it is very rare for me to like a series that is in a dub as they always sound crap. watching full metal ppanic i heard an episode in english and it sound strange and boring. besides i like the captains voice in the japanese.

either way this debate will never stop. amy opinion is that subs are superior due to the fact that they are done with a voice that is actually matching the characters; in some cases it is a bit wierd but managable. in the japanese version of trigun that i watched (didn't like it much) the voice of vash is awesome yet the english tried to do the same but it sounded abit emotionless to me.

dubs aren't all bad but in order to be good the acting has to be wanted by the actor. more often than not they hardly show emotion or sound dull, the only exception i have found is hiliray haag who was the only high point for the rahxephon dub. although i suppose i could be anti dub due to the fact that tiffany bloody grant has an annoying granting voice. (in my opinion)
 
it just comes down to if you like the voices of dub or the sub... you know people have different tastes in music and mayeb the person just can't stand listening to japanese voicse or english voices that just sound "flat" or "overacted".

I absolutely hated xellos/zelgadiss's voice in engilsh they sounded so lame, cause the japanese voice sounds "cool" and fits them.




no I don't think so as long as it sounds right.

I don't look up pictures of voice actors or seiyuus I just watch and and it's fine as long the voice is fine. who knows maybe the musucaluar guy is played by a girl, how the hell should will you know unless you look up a picture of the vocie actor.
 
It is moderately annoying that the forum now just quotes the post, and not the post that the post quotes, thereby losing some of the thread of the conversation. I digress.

I know several (more than five, less than ten) authentic Japanese people who watch English (or sometimes Chinese) dubs because they can't stand Japanese voice actors: they say that by and large, the Japanese actors are overacting grotesquely, similar to what you would expect in... say, an American cartoon. They also seem to say "My six year old niece loves that show!!" any time I admit to liking a particular anime.

Me: Wow, Gantz is pretty cool!
Authentic Japanese Person: My six year old niece loves that show!

No joke. Ok, I don't think anybody said that about Gantz. But still, I hear it about 99.9% of the Japanese cartoon shows I talk about with Japanese people. Also that the voice acting is terrible.

I think you're maybe confusing Funimation with someone who makes bad dubs....?
 
I'm not illiterate, but I vastly prefer a dub to a sub. Mainly because - and here's a crazy thought - I like to understand the speech while not moving my eyes down to the words on the screen. I personally lose some interest in the acting of the voice actors if I can't actually understand them. The subtle emotions that come from slight variations in a person's voice that I could relate to are lost due to that. Add to that that I feel that Japanese voice actors over-act their parts, like Symph Lizard said. I read manga, and watch/listen anime.

And I like Funimation. Fullmetal Alchemist anybody?

One thing I found interesting is that, I can't stand Chinese dubs. The voices I found all sounds so similar. Its like one person is doing the entire cast. It could be I'm Chinese and because of that, I know that in situations like this and that he/she doesn't sound like how its being voiced. Although this is just a guess to why I don't like Chinese dubs, it could be it for the Japanese.

If the Japanese do find the voicing to be overreacted, I or we find it normal or even perfectly voiced.
 
You can grasp more of what the anime portrays through characters' dialog if you listen to it in your native language, so in all honesty I believe subs = Japanese and dubs = country of that particular dub. Of course everyone has the freedom to listen to anime outside of their language and I do many times. But some dubs are fantastic, it's all about the effort and detail put into the voicing in my opinion. I'm not saying some voices can't automatically suck but I am saying you can tell when someone put effort into their work and when someone just didn't care. I'd usually only prefer subs if the dub is outright annoying.

Naruto (although it's not perfect), Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Steamboy, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Macross Plus, Gundam Wing, and Fullmetal Alchemist are all wonderful dubs.
