As for the topic at hand, for the love of freaking God. This again? Sigh.

Most of the time, I go for dubs with the exception of most anime recorded by the Ocean Group. Their track record is not the best and their previous works really turned me off. Anything recorded by Bang Zoom! Entertainment (their more recent stuff anyways), Animaze, ZRO, and New Generation Pictures I always watch unless for the off chance that it's not good.

Honestly, I hate these kind of discussion. It always goes nowhere and more often than not leads to flaming.

I feel that so much is lost in Dubs. The Japanese language is a wonderous language who's very writings can convey an immense amount of spirit if not data about a person, place or thing.

Translations somehow transform Anime from 3D to 2D. I've had my fair share of Dubs and was not personally impressed.
 
Or the language can be puns, regional expressions, historical or pop references we don't understand, in which case, dubs are superior. Sometimes when watching subs the people's expression are usually bland and cold, in which dubs are also superior.

I'm not talking I'M THA KING OF PIRATEZ style dub, I meant dubs done right.

Point taken, however stating that one ideal is "superior" than another is rather one sided. Unless of course something imperical can be presented to conclude the argument. This topic is opinion driven and the question was more of a "which do you prefer" without the intent of starting a debate

I prefer Subs because I can understand the spoken Japanese language proficiently and Dubs in my opinion don't really capture the animation behind it. Studying the culture has also helped build a level of intimacy behind every Anime I've watched.
 
Because rednecks in who speak in English sound funnier than they do in Japanese, plus there isn't any grown Japanese women trying to sound like a cute little girl.
 
Usually subs because.. well thats what its meant to be, though sometimes a direct/literal translation makes little sense. Oftem subs won't reinvent jokes/play on words/ideas that only specific Asian cultures could relate to.

Overall it depends on the anime/quality of dubbing. Like the Gainax Evangelion and w/e does Full Metal Alchemist on adult swim are very good. Hellsing is my favorite dub because as Anime taking place in BRITAIN, the characters should have BRITISH accents, also Alexander Anderson gets a IRISH/SCOTTISH accent which only make him that much cooler, though the creator obviously had no clue of the differences of the region, most would assume his catholic-ness makes him irish.
 
Well I certainly didn't say superior in the way that it is mathematically better, it's the same as saying: "This burger is the best," it just fits for the situation.

When I watch dubs I feel more involved and not distanced by the language barriers, and the thing I mentioned before, pop culture, puns, and hirigana + katakana mix up and regional differences. Japanese language is complicated and the way it's spoken in formal tone, when translated directly, makes me feel like it's cold and too much formality, not enough camaraderie, but that's my feelings.

Exception to the rule: In the baking bread anime (I forgot what it's called) I actually understood the Julio Iglesias reference, so that made me lol'ed.



You don't need to understand hentai. Plus, they say like 4 words in total: SUGOI, KIMOCHI, ONEGAI, ICK~U
 
Watching it raw is the best for those who claim to want to watch it as it's suppose to be. You never know how acturate fansubs are. Many times they have poor English, spelling, and say the most silly things.

For those who don't know the language, they may not even know if the Japanese voice actors are good or not.

The Anime was called "Yakitate!! Japan", absolutely funny Cooking Master Chef was another good one. I've seen these when I was particularly fascinated with various Anime produced around inanimate or unusual objects like baseballs, pandas or rocks.
