Subfolders on S60? No? YES!!

^Nah..

But more folder opening...I have all of my apps split into folders that don't require scrolling. I'd hate to have to bury things in multiple folders as that seems like it would take just as much time.

I had mine organized such that I wouldn't have to scroll in any folder, except for Games. Even then, I found that it took a couple of seconds to display the contents of folders. As of now, the response times seem almost subsecond. Although I have to go through another level to access some of the same apps, I can access them much faster now. Or so it seems...

P.S. I'm sold on the idea. It definitely is worth it and the phone responds a lot faster now. One more sublevel isn't going to be counterproductive.

hm, well, might be worth a shot if the menu speed is that noticable. i honestly have most of the stuff i use on the active standby and soft keys, so i rarely open the menu up, but when i do it definitely isn't what i would call snappy.

why not make a folder for things you never use and keep them locked in there. No need to create subfolders and your menu speed should be even snappier....or switch to s40

I don't think I understand where this new speed is coming from. I have 5 folders on my menu (Connectivity, Games, Organizer, Media, and Tools) and none of them display their contents very quickly when I open them. Is it being suggested that I merely add a level of folders to these folders I already have and they will open faster? How does this work?

I already have. I call it Tools. In here, I have the Help, About, Settings, PTT and a bunch of other apps that I don't normally use. Besides that, in every folder under Menu, I had at least 12 applications per folder. All of these I use often enough that they won't be relegated to some NEVERUSEBUTWONTUNINSTALL folder.

I don't know how many apps you have installed on your phone, but if you can get away with an S40 device, then more power to you.

11, 6, 14, 10, and 20 respectively. By all means, tell me exactly what to do. I've been itching for an excuse to reorder my menus and this seems like the perfect excuse to do it.

Okay...the DR is suggesting 2 apps per folder. If I do my math correctly thats...tick tick tick tick.....tick tick tick tick....tick....
54 folders with 13 of them with sub folders. Now that makes for a fast UI.

edit: And how the H do you only have 5 folders? You like a clean menu dont you?

There's shortcuts for everything I use outside the menu. With active standby, the media key, and other shortcuts like the power and green button, I only end up using the menu for multitasking. What other folders do you have?

lol...guess your right...right now on my E50 I've only got tools, connect, office, media, installation, and a personal games folder. On my E61 and N73 I had created more as I went along. I guess the longer I have a phone the more I create and the more i personalize. Right now I'm using a pearl so i'm taking a s60 "break" until the N95 comes home. I'm sure I'll be a bit more creative with that phone but the E50 is kind of uninspiring and a great "work" phone....hence the "E" moniker.

Same boat as you - sold the E50 to a coworker, loaned the E60 to another for doing development. I really love the SureType on this Pearl, Nokia needs to pony up some licensing fees and use this keyboard and AI, it rules.

A large downside, of course, is the utter lack of *any* folders on the Pearl, heh. It's a bit disconcerting at first but you get used to it I suppose...

I don't recall suggesting 2 apps per folder; 54 folders doesn't make for a fast UI AND your addition and/or division is WAYYYY off. I won't bother trying to explain CSc theory and why a 'balanced' menu makes for a fast UI. Try to keep the number of icons in any folder under 9. This includes the main menu.

I've got 93 total in 10 folders and 8 subfolders.

In your case, I'd try to shoot for 9 menu folders and a few subfolders.

Just being silly Doctor. I actually agree with you on this subject. If I've got a folder overloaded with apps it's sluggish in opening and navigating so a few more folders does equal some snappier response time IMO.

So I screwed around with this a bit just now and I have greatly reduced the time it takes to open other folders. I put a folder called "Junk" inside "Tools" and moved every piece of junk application on the phone in there. Each folder has 9 or less applications, including the menu, and it takes about 1/4 second to open any of the folders, containing only the files I want. I do confess that the main menu is a bit ugly so I might put more there and see how it performs, but I'm loving the cleanliness and the speed!

I think he's suggesting as you've said. Many folders with fewer apps in them. I know when I start cleaning out my "installed" folder on my E50 it opens up much quicker. Obviously the installed folder is the default folder for all installations. If I leave everything in there I notice some severe lag when I open it and when I press up once or twice it's painfully slow. If I re-organize everything and start plopping them into folders I;ve created or prefer it's much much snappier. Not the initial menu but certainly the once overloaded folder....dont know if I just made any sense there but oh ewll...
