I have researched and found three cars that I'm interested in. I already compared the first two (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090103121937AAVT3mQ) and this is a final round.

2004 Subaru Impreza Wagon

and

2000 Toyota Rav 4

I'm looking for low cost of ownership, mainly gas economy and relative maintenance free ownership to replace my money sink of a truck.

I'm asking from owners and those in the know alike, which is the better of the two?

unless the Rav4 has a V6 engine don't even consider buying it.

the Subaru is best for snow and mud.

the toyota has that rear mounted spare tire that if you get bumped from behind will shatter the rear window. also that rear door swings out instead of lifting up, that's awkward and dangerous in parking lots.

the new Honda CRV 08/09 is not for snow or off road but it's more powerful 4 cyl engine and bigger tires make for a smoother ride. if your not buying new, avoid the older crv's they are underpowered.

Most definitely the Subaru. Toyota is OK but are priced too high for what they are. You may want to consider the Forester.

neither a ford is more reliable trust me i have a ford ranger 5 speed going on 3 years now and had no problems out of it hell the only time i lose oil is when i am doing a oil change but back on subject if i had to pick out of them two it would have to be the ToyotaSubaru they are more depending then Subaru

They will both be very dependable and relatively maintenance free. I think that anything with a higher year(2004) will have a much better re-sale value down the road. Also I think that Subaru has just as good of a re-sale value as Toyota.

I'd go with the Subaru. (I think they both have good economy)

Based on your criteria, the Toyota will be the best option.

The Subaru is the better vehicle overall when you factor in power and durability but the Toyota is best in cost of ownership, gas economy and maintenance.
