Subaru Forester vs. Jeep Cherokee?

I am getting a new car, and am considering the Subaru Forester, or a Jeep Wrangler or jeep Cherokee. i plan to get a used car, something made within the last 4 or 5 years at the most. Can anyone who has had any of these cars give me opinions? I would like something that is comfortable and safe on the road, but can be taken on LIGHT off-roading trips.

My husband and I will only by from Subaru anymore. I just got a forester myself. They are standard with all wheel drive. Its all they make. Their crashstar rating is one of the best.

Jeep is owned by Chrysler- which has gone completely bankrupt. I think investing in a Jeep would be a waste of money. The value will go down significantly.

First, the Jeep Cherokee was cancelled in 2001. The Forester is a car, the Wrangler has a full frame and uses REAL four wheel drive, not all wheel drive, which is far better for any kind of off roading trips. The Cherokee is unibody, but still uses real four wheel drive. The Jeep is going to be more safe than the Subaru, but not as comfortable, nor get as good of gas mileage. But, a 2001 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L I6 will last longer than a 2010 Subaru will.
