Stupid question I know... but curious! Americans call crisps chips, so

what do they call actual chips? I overheard some female American students on a train in London the other day, they said:
"Does anyone have any chips"
"Don't you mean crisps?"
"I have an apple"
"I also have an apple!"
^This inspired me to ask this...
It's worded all confuzzlingly isnt it?
