Stupid joke or actual theft

Ok, so last night my study-association, Storm, had some informal party. Before that I had put my bag, with my laptop, chargers, external harddrives, etc at a certain place in the room. The bag was closed, leaving me to think it was ok to leave it there...

Boy, was I wrong! I returned to my bag, exactly where I left it, at about 10 pm. It was opened and the only thing missing was my laptop... I didn't see it happening and unfortunately none of my friends saw it either. I do, however have some suspicions towards a few other associations. I think it was taken by more than one person, I even suspect the lamest of lame jokes...

This morning I went to the police to inform them of the theft, and I actually have the papers with me. All that's left for me now is to email the associations and inform them as well. Hopefully I'll get it back, or at least the insurance-co. will pay me, so I can get a new one...

What do you guys think?

Who would have the time to go through a bag and take out everything except the laptop itself? the main thing that has value. It hasto be a prank of somesort or a really stupid theif?

then I misread. But who would want a laptop without a way to charge it? Unless someone was in a hurry? I had my laptop stolen also. I know how it feels. Hopefully you get it back!

Turns out it was a stupid joke after all... The fucker dropped it off at the security's office in our campus' main building. After that he sent an email to the police telling his story. Today he's at the police station where I reported the theft, telling his story.

Thing is, when I got home thursday, after I got it back that is, I noticed some things were different. The asshat put a power-on password on the laptop, leaving me unable to do anything, unless I got the password or a way around it. After a couple of hours I finally got the machine to work again, but now it keeps failing to find the harddisc, every time I start it for the first time. Only if I start it up, enter the BIOS and exit again, every thing is fine. Also, the touchpad doesn't work anymore. Yet, I have no clue wether it was something I did trying to fix it or not, but ultimately, indirectly or directly, it's a result of him taking my laptop...

So when the officer said he'd be talking to the flammer, he also said that if said summummabitch doesn't mention anything about doing something with my laptop, it might become a legal case. If that actually happens, I might just be able to get a new laptop on his account...

And Icky, you're right, losing my data is worse than losing the laptop, but still... Thankfully, all the important data I have (even better, almost all of it) is stored on those two external HDD's.

I just hope I won't punch him in the face when I see him...

So... that sucks!

Perhaps some stupid guy that wanted a laptop really bad and well he didin't take the time to think that he would need the charger and stuff... A real loser and first time offender, IMO, he was so nervious he would get caught he left only with the laptop.

The worse is losing the data.... well you can always try to send an email to the other associations, even the one you are on, saying that if the laptop was misteriously restored to a location (like... send by mail or something) or just even the hard disk it would be ok.

Sorry to hear that, I hope you get at least refound.

Tell your friends you're filing a police report If they tell you it was a joke and return it, fine. If they still play dumb, file it. If they find out one of your friends pulled a joke where they didn't see obviously where to stop, it'll be up to you to press charges.

I think the confusing part is in the asshat taking my laptop, me not being sure whether it's a joke or actual theft and filing charges, while later on the LT was returned to me. What should be less confusing is that he is actually willing to pay for anything, be it either repairs or a new laptop. He knows he fucked up and he knows he's got to pay for it.

Bingo.

Thieves are, by default, people who are too damn lazy to earn what they have, therefore anything that is hard to unload gets left. Random hardware and inconspicuous looking items tat are actaully valuable or even valuable items taht are simply hard to sell generally get ignored.

If I've got ab rand new set of EMG guitar pickups on my shelf, and my cheap guitar right beside it, then those EMG pickups are worth more than that guitar I've got beside it. But which do you think a thief will take? The guitar.

They're a guitar part that only guitarists will even really recognize what they are.

So douchebag sees you've got a laptop in your bag, he's a lazy oppurtunistic thief, in his paranoia and desire to make a quick buck, he yoinks it and doesnt think about grabbing the other hardware because he's a lazy oppurtunistic thief who is trying to get the loot and go before someone notices.

He probably fucked around with it until the battery went dead. Does it look like it's been taken apart by any chance? Is there a possibility he formatted the hard drive by any chance? It should still be able to find the hard drive, but perhaps the error message is along the lines of not being able to find an operating system? You mentioned he changed the password so I'll assume the operating system is intact... but then you said that it cant find the hard drive so how can the operating system load for you to get to a password screen?
