Studios, production companies etc help!

Can anyone explain to me the start credits of fils these days.

It used to be easy - a film studio logo would come up (normally 20th Century Fox, Paramount, Universal, RKO, Orion, MGM etc etc etc). You knew the film was made and distributed by that studio.

Nowadays sometimes you get 2, 3 or 4 studios/production companies logos come up at the start. e.g. I saw MI:3 on Tuesday, and UIP (which I presume what used to be United Artists?) came up, followed by Universal.

And where's the Rank Gong gone? :(

Help! :)

Rank's no longer in the film business.

UIP = United International Pictures. Their logo is on the movie because UIP is the UK (and worldwide) distributor of most movies from Paramount (they were the ones who did Mission: Impossible III, by the way), Universal and DreamWorks... and for some years they used to release MGM and United Artists movies as well (the latter two are now part of Sony, and therefore handled by Columbia - but most MGM movies are still released in the UK by Twentieth Century Fox).

More co-productions = more company logos, although sometimes they leave some or all of them for the end.
