Strep followed by loss of appetite

Hi -

I starting feeling sick on April 1st, and went to the doctor on April 3rd and found out I had strep. They put me on 875 MG of Amoxicillin for 10 days. I finished my last pills on April 12th.

During this time I lost about 14LBs as I could not eat much because of my throat. I normally eat like a truck driver. Although I feel much better, my appetite is non existent since. Literally nothing appeals to me, I get full after eating just a few bites, and in turn my energy is down, etc.

I've never had my appetite totally go away like this. I'm slightly concerned, and will be more concerned if it does not return in a few days.

Any thoughts on this?

ps - I am a 40 yr old male, avg height and wt, non smoker if that matters.

Today is just the 16th. Give it time. Antibiotics, esp at that level, do all sorts of things to your appetite and digestion.

Every time I've had strep I've had an extreme upset stomach. I can actually tell I have strep simply by how my stomach feels, as opposed to that my throat is sore.

I don't think it would be unusual for strep and antibiotics to upset your stomach.

To be on the safe side, you should be taking some probiotics so that you don't end up letting the bacteria in your gut take over. Eat some yogurt or just take some pills.

You should be ok in a few days.
