Just watched Streetcar name Desie on Sky Movies.
Firstly, it was a great copy but most importantly, I'd forgotten what a great film it is.
Mesmorising performances from Brando and Leigh. Plus great support from Kim (planet of the apes) Hunter and Karl Marlen who sadly died just recently.
Interesting to note that the cast was intact from the Broadway production except Jessica Tandy was replaced by Vivien Leigh as Blanche. They originally wanted Olivia de Havilland (Melanie in GWTW) but she overpriced herself. They also considered Bette Davis (also in the running for Scarlet in GWTW). Again, the role of this most southern of american ladies went to an english actress (as in GWTW) and the same actress - Vivien Leigh (but she had played the role on the West End stage).
According to her biography, in later years Leigh was prone to perioRAB when she would confuse her own life with that of Blanche's life.
If you get the chance, watch it next time it's on. It sizzles in the New Orleans heat.
