I've tried several sizes, including a stock 12", and that is the one I use for trips. Its the most effective but doesn't solve all of the buffeting. Some of the problem is the air coming up under and around the batwing. Hope this saves you a few bucks I tried to stay as low as possible because it looks better imho went 6", 8", then recurves, klockworks. I now use a 8" recurve around town and day trips, and put the 12" stocker on for trips. One word of caution watch where the top of the shield lines up with your line of site. 12" (I think) recurve didn't work for me as you can't see thru the recurve and was even with my line of site.
 
I am patiently waiting for my Chrome cash checks to get here so I can go get my HD Windsplitter , best looking that I have seen as they don't look like melted plastic.
 
I recently rented a 2010 sg while my bike was in the shop and I agree about the windshield being useless; while I had it I put an LRS 9" Ultra flip up on it that I had lying around the garage and it worked pretty well......many complained about the looks....but I'm a function over form guy myself......if it don't work I don't care how good it looks......here it is....
 
I have the 6.5 Klockwerks on my 2010 Street Glide, works great. One thing to determine before you order anything, are you expecting the shield to perform like the windshield on a convertible (shielding you from all wind) or are you expecting to have some wind in your face like when riding a motorcycle>

My biggest complaint about the stock windshield is that the design without the flare at the top let the air go down to the tank and back up the body to the face. The Klockwerks flare gives non turbulent air in the face like riding a bike without a shield.
 
There are a lot of good options available. I've had good luck with LRS (pricing & fast service) and recently went to the 7" X-Stream which I like the best so far. Started with a 6" LRS with standard recurve. It worked well but a little short for my set up (2010 SG, 5'-10" stock seat). I still get a fair amount of buffeting from all air coming from underneath. I added the HD fairing deflectors which helped but the batwing beating continues. Aside from the correct windshield set up that fits the riders height I've decided that the only way to minimize the buffeting is to add lowers.
